[Present-day diagnostic techniques in breast nodes].

AIM: A comparative analysis of the effectiveness of preoperative diagnostic techniques in breast nodes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 110 females with breast cancer and 306 females with benign tumors of the breast were examined (mammography, ultrasound, aspiration biopsy). A new technique of ultrasound histography of the tumor which enhances diagnostic specificity of echography is introduced. RESULTS: Diagnostic sensitivity averaged 82.8 +/- 3.9, 88.3 +/- 3.2, 69.3 +/- 4.5% for mammography, ultrasonic visualization and aspiration biopsy, respectively. Informative value of mammography and aspiration biopsy decreased in females of reproductive age, especially in preexisting hyperplastic processes in the breast. CONCLUSION: With greater size of the tumor in the breast ultrasound becomes more sensitive but less specific. The additional histography of the tumor in such cases is useful.

[Globoid cell leukodystrophy (Krabbe's disease)].

One case of Krabbe's disease was found for 25 years among 40500 newborns; this concerned a girl who died from the aspiration pneumonia at the age of 8.5 months. A number of typical one- and multinuclear globoid cells were observed in white matter of the large hemispheres and brain stem. Brain was atrophied by 27%. Thrombosis of some brain vessels was noted microscopically in the zone affected, this being attributed to the cytomegalovirus angiotoxic effect. The presence of polynuclear leukocytes in the nervus trigeminus branches is considered to be an equivalent of the brain globoid cells that phagocytize the products of the myelin destruction in the peripheral nerves.

[The health status of children under poor ecological and social conditions].

In the Republic of Altai, the past decades are marked by poor trends in the children's health status: lower birth rates, a rise in general and infantile mortality and morbidity and worse physical development. The districts and areas that differ in environmental and social characteristics have been identified. Their comparison has determined the influence of environmental and social factors on the health status of children. There is a relationship of the children's health to environmental and social factors. It has been found that social factors much more influence than do environmental ones. A combination of environmental and social factors exerts the greatest impact on the basic health indices. In the area exposed to a combination of negative effects of these factors where natives predominantly live, there are negative changes in the children's health status. The leading social factors are maternal working conditions, familial financial position, a child's dietary habits, and living conditions.

[Gender differences in health status and life quality of students].

The study has revealed that the leading hygienic risk factor of disorders and low life quality in medical students are an excess educational load at the expense of lecture and extra lecture hours, which is not characteristic of engineering students for whom the organization of a training process mostly meets the sanitary requirements. Gender differences have been found in life quality assessed by young males and females. Social factors have been proved to be the most significant parameters modifying the student's life quality. Moreover, the students of both institutes show decreased mental capacity by the third year of studies, by the fourth year, there are signs of its enhancement irrespective of gender.

[Lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme in Rous sarcoma and muscle tissue of tumor-bearing hens].

The isoenzymic spectrum and lactate dehydrogenase activity (LDH) were studied in tumor and pectoral muscle of both chicken and adult hens on the 6th, 10th and 15th day after their infection with the Rous sarcoma virus. On the 14th day, unlike the muscles of intact hens, in the tumour the content of LDH-5 increases and that of rapidly migrating fraction LDG-1 and LDG-2 decreases. In pectoral muscles unaffected by the tumour (on the opposite side of the sternum) there is a tendency to an increase in LDH-4 content and to a decrease in LDH-1 and LDG-2 content, which is followed by a decreasing proportion of N/M subunits.
