[Mechanism of action of electromagnetic fields biologically adequate to man].

The paper analyzes 10-year experience in making experimental observations and clinically using electromagnetic fields (EMF) biologically adequate to man. Basic investigations of the electromechanical process that lead to the occurrence of currents in the bone tissue and blood vascular walls in their functional deformation were conducted. They showed that the piezoelectric effect is the most marked in the intact bone tissue. Experimental studies determined the amplitude and shape of impulses of currents emerging in the intact bone tissue of the extremities and in the walls of blood vessels during pulse blood filling. The bioelectric tissue metabolism changes in various human locomotor abnormalities. The lost part in the diseased area can be restored by means of external EMF. On this basis, devices for human biologically adequate electromagnetic therapy were designed. The efficiency of each session of electromagnetic therapy was evaluated from the normalization of blood circulation in the diseased area. The efficiency of this therapy in vascular disease was noted to depend on the synchronization of the generated electromagnetic pulse with the pulse wave of a patient and its phases. An experiment on 13 intact mongrel dogs was made to reveal the impact of EMF biologically adequate to man on bone marrow hemopoiesis. EMF 2 was found to have a stimulating effect on granulocytopoiesis. Platelet counts were elevated in the peripheral blood of animals. Analysing 2000 clinical cases and canine experimental findings provided evidence for the following mechanism of action of the electromagnetic fields biologically adequate to man. The fields exert a primary initial and virtually rapid action on the active areas of nerve structures and smooth muscle of blood vascular walls. They show a primary, but slower action on blood cells and on the vascular endothelial structure. There may be a secondary impact of EMF on some endocrine glands, which causes changes in the protein metabolism of a biological object and appears as stimulation of granulocytopoiesis and depot platelet release into the peripheral blood stream.

[Non-contact, biologically adequate, electromagnetic stimulation of reparative regeneration of osseous, cartilagenous and muscular tissues in children].

The authors analyse the results of using a Kaskad electromagnetic apparatus in 508 children with long-term ununited fractures, false joints, contractures, sluggish wounds, decubituses, trophical ulcers, osteochondropathies, Pertes' disease, and crush syndrome. The efficiency of the therapy was 75-90%, depending on the type of an abnormality. The authors had developed and put into practice a Kaskad-synchro electromagnetic apparatus synchronized with the pulse of a patient's arterial vessel. Such a high efficiency of the electromagnetic therapy bioadequate to man is likely to be explained by the exposure of electromagnetic waves directly to the areas of bone marrow hemopoiesis. To elucidate this, the authors made an experiment on dogs. The results of this experiment are being processed.

[Endolymphatic therapy of children with chronic osteomyelitis of the long tubular bones].

A study was made of the clinical efficacy and immune status in 40 children with chronic osteomyelitis of long tubular bones. Of these, 13 patients received antibiotics endolymphatically and 27 patients were given conventional antibiotic therapy (intramuscularly, intravenously). In view of the predominance of the staphylococcal flora, endolymphatic therapy included the use of gentamycin and lincomycin, the treatment course lasted up to 10 days. Endolymphatic antibacterial therapy has been demonstrated to produce a beneficial clinical effect there was a decrease in fever duration, the amount of postoperative complications, and the duration of inpatient treatment. After endolymphatic therapy the patients' blood manifested a more remarkable, as compared to the control group, rise of the absolute count of T lymphocytes, "active" population of T lymphocytes, together with an increase of the functional activity of lymphocytes in blast transformation, and a reduction, to an equal degree, of the neutrophil and monocyte counts, attesting to a decline of antigenic load of phagocytes. In patients who received antibiotics endolymphatically, the general blood analysis showed a decrease of neutrophilia and marked lymphocytosis. All this mirrored the intensity of immunity activation.

[Immunologic correction in the treatment of chronic hematogenic osteomyelitis of long tubular bones in children].

Children suffering from chronic osteomyelitis of long tubular bones were compared for the action of the immunomodulating drug tactivin injected subcutaneously and endolymphatically. The study was carried out in 57 patients staying in hospital. The patients were distributed into the following groups: 18 patients entered a group where tactivin was injected subcutaneously, 9 patients made up a group where the drug was administered endolymphatically, and a reference group included 30 patients treated by conventional methods. On admission the patients demonstrated secondary immunodeficiency characterized by the lowering of the absolute and relative T lymphocyte count, a decrease of functional activity in blast transformation of lymphocytes, and dysimmunoglobulinemia. The use of immunomodulation with tactivin whatever the route of administration promoted a more uneventful course of the postoperative period, a decrease of suppurations of the postoperative wounds, reduction of the patient's hospital stay, a decrease in the dose of antibacterial drugs required for continuous treatment, and enhancement of the efficacy of antibacterial therapy. The use of tactivin endolymphatically brings about rapid normalization of the count of T, T active and B lymphocytes, an increase of the indicated parameters to the lower limit of normal on subcutaneous injection. As for the reference group, these parameters continue a progressive lowering.

[Isolation of the bronchi with intraoperative packing in children with bronchiectasis].

The authors discuss experience in 168 operations for extirpation and segmental resection of affected bronchi in children with bronchiectases. To prevent recanalization of the bronchus after its segmental resection and to prevent the formation of an abscess in the isolated part of the lung they suggest a method for intraoperative packing of the remaining bronchi with biopolymer material.
