A controlled evaluation of assertion training with adolescents.

A controlled evaluation of an assertion training package for adolescent students is described. Adolescents who received the treatment were compared to adolescents who received a placebo-counseling program. Although there were no significant differences between the groups prior to the program, the students who received the assertion training treatment significantly improved their ratings on the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale both at termination and at a one-month follow-up. No effects were found on a locus of control scale or an anxiety scale for either program.

Assertion training with adolescents.

A month-long assertion training program for adolescents was instituted and evaluated in a middle-school setting. A group of 23 adolescents who received the treatment was compared to a group of 23 adolescents who did not receive the treatment. Although there were no significant differences between the groups prior to the program, the group who received the training significantly improved their scores on the Piers -Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale and the Intellectual Achievement Responsibility Questionnaire by the termination of the program. The group who did not receive any special program showed no change in their scores on these scales. These differences were still present at a seven-week follow-up.

Susceptibility of 1,500 isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to gentamicin, carbenicillin, colistin, and polymyxin B.

A series of 1,500 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was collected from a variety of sources to provide a group of strains which would truly represent the species. All of them were pyocine typed, and a wide range of types was included among the isolates from each source. The gentamicin, carbenicillin, colistin, and polymyxin minimal inhibitory concentration of each strain was measured by the agar dilution method employing the Steers inocula replicator. Over 99% of strains were inhibited by 8 mug of gentamicin per ml, by 256 mug of carbenicillin per ml, and by 4 mug of colistin per ml. The small number of strains more resistant to each antibiotic comprised a variety of different pyocine types. Few strains were found to be susceptible to tetracycline, chloramphenicol, kanamycin, or streptomycin at the single concentration tested.

Candicidin and other polyenic antifungal antibiotics.

About 50 polyenic antifungal antibiotics produced by actinomycetes have been isolated and described. Among these are the most effective antimonilial agents so far known. These polyenes can be classified into four broad groups depending on the number of conjugated carbon-to-carbon double bonds that are present in their chromophores. Only some of the tetraenes (four conjugated double bonds), such as nystatin and pimaricin, and a few heptaenes (seven conjugated double bonds), such as amphotericin B, Trichomycin candicidin and hamycin, have found practical application in the treatment of infectious diseases caused by fungi. Nystatin and pimaricin show the least in vitro activity against fungi, while trichomycin and candicidin are the most active. Recent clinical investigations carried out in the USA have shown that candicidin is very effective in the treatment of vaginal monilial infections.
