The main epidemiologic characteristics of primary angle glaucoma in Tunisia were studied in 5000 patients of Pr. AYED's external consultation at the National Institute of Ophthalmology. It appeared that POAG is a frequent and serious disease in Tunisia: a true problem of public health. The importance of the early diagnosis based essentially on a systematic intraocular pressure test together with the examination of optic disc and the visual field investigation using automated perimetry in suspected cases is discussed.
Among 214 children living at Blindness Institute of Bir El Kassaa the causes of blindness were determined. Main causes were: congenital glaucoma, tapeto retinal degeneration and congenital cataract because of high prevalence of consanguinity. The importance of prevention based on genetic council is raised.
Farnsworth 100 Hue test was used to investigate color vision in 100 diabetic patients. Blue Yellow axis dyschromatopsia was found in 66.5% of patients. Such a dyschromatopsia precedes diabetic retinopathy in 55% of patients. Its frequency increased as a function of the increasing severity of diabetic retinopathy. On the other hand, 36% of the patients suffering from dyschromatopsia misinterpreted the self-monitoring (urine and blood) tests. These results suggest that the investigation of color vision may be a useful tool for the early screening of diabetic retinopathy particularly in self-monitoring patients.
The authors are investigating cases of corneal blindness in Tunisia. In the rural areas of the southern part of Tunisia, the corneal blindness is the second cause for sight loss and is responsible for almost 25% of the cases of blindness. In areas where preventive blindness programs have been set up, the prevalence rate of blindness caused by corneal disease has risen from 25% to 8% within the past few years. The most frequent etiology is composed by trachoma, traumatism and corneal ulcers. The authors insist on better prevention and better treatment of corneal diseases.

The authors study 202 strabismus cases and evaluate the strabismic epidemiology of Tunisia: 58% of squint children have amblyopia. The low vision is important, and getting worse with age. The treatment is simple, consisting of occlusion of the good eye, but it become longer and more difficult after six years. The best results are obtained in the first four years. Good cooperation from the parents is required. The authors insist on the necessity of early detection through testing, the prevention of recurrence and, above all, on preventing the advent of amblyopia as soon as strabismus appears.

UNLABELLED: Open-angle glaucoma is most frequent in diabetics. Its evolution seems to be most severe although an equilibrated tonometry under glaucoma treatment in literature. AIM OF THE STUDY: comparison of evolution of glaucoma between diabetics and non diabetics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study of 72 glaucomatous patients diabetic and non diabetic was performed. A complete ophthalmologic examination with tonometry, funduscopy: sup disc measurement and automated perimetry was realised. Evolution was studied after chirurgical or medical treatment each four months with a mean follow up of 2 years. RESULTS: We observed that the evolution of Open-angle glaucoma in diabetics is significatively not different from non diabetics. CONCLUSION: Open-angle glaucoma evolution in diabetics is not more severe than general population.
