Research studies of bifocals for myopia.

Inadequacies of past clinical reports on bifocals for progressive myopia have fostered the use of scientific methods in gathering data, with control groups of patients in experimental research studies. A summary and discussion of these research studies suggest that myopic progression may be influenced by bifocals, including some effects which are clinically meaningful as well as statistically significant. Benefits are not universal among myopes but might be predictable on the basis of patient characteristics, diagnostic data, magnitude of the add, design of the segment, and environmental demands and conditions.

Psychological factors in pediatric optometry.

There are many special considerations and unique approaches applicable in the optometric care of children. In pursuing diagnostic procedures, the behavioral adjustment and responsiveness of the child during the examination proceedings may be optimally managed through an appropriate atmosphere and demeanor. Malingering and other interrelationships of behavioral anomalies and visual disorders may be understood and analyzed in relevant contexts. In pursuing procedures in treatment, approaches in prescribing lenses may be associated with resistance on the part of the child or parent, and may relate to personality characteristics and changes. The application of thoughtful techniques may facilitate maximal progress in a therapy program of visual training. Furthermore, complex psychological problems may coexist with visual disorders in learning disabilities, where broad aspects of development are of concern. Finally, the effective care of routine cases or of learning disabled children requires careful communication and counseling with parents.

Survey of student research in behavioral and developmental optometry.

Behavioral and developmental optometry are in need of research. Studies conducted by optometric students can provide a major contribution. The present paper reviews selected student research studies conducted at the Illinois College of Optometry. The topics include: trends in developmental vision, phenomena in binocular vision, and techniques in diagnosis and treatment.

Behavioral effects of children's nearpoint lenses.

Procedures in clinical optometry include the therapeutic and preventive use of lenses for the express purpose of favorably modifying visual behavior in nearpoint activities, especially for children. The research bases for such procedures have been greatly elaborated in recent years. Research evidence now exists to clarify some of the actual effects of lenses upon behavior, indicating possible ways of explaining the underlying mechanisms or processes of such effects, while further suggesting clinical techniques for the appropriate diagnostic determination of nearpoint lens prescriptions.
