A study of the volumetric setting shrinkage of some dental materials.

The setting reaction of six dental materials has been studied by using a water dilatometer at 25 degrees and 37 degrees C. Where there is no water absorption during the test, the method gives reproducible values of the setting shrinkage and at the same time shows a clear physical picture of the entire setting process. This method is suitable for adaptation as a specification test for setting shrinkage and has good potential for being used as a supplementary or substitute test for initial and final set times.

Hematological changes produced in mice by Nuvacron or Furadan.

The effects of multiple intraperitoneal doses of Nuvacron (0.8 mg/kg) or Furadan (0.25 mg/kg) on hematological values in mice were studied. The following were measured: clotting time, hemoglobin content, total count of red blood cells and white blood cells, differential count of white blood cells, platelet count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, hematocrit value, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, bone marrow and splenic measurements. These pesticides caused a significant decrease in hemoglobin content, total count of red blood cells, platelet count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and hematocrit value. The administration of Nuvacron or Furadan prolonged the clotting time and caused an increase in total count of white blood cells. Among white blood cells, there was an increase in neutrophils and basophils and a fall in the count of lymphocytes in treated animals. Bone marrow depression and splenic hyperplasia were observed in mice after administration of the pesticides.

Effects of Hb types and G-6-PD deficiency on height, weight and skinfolds: a study on Indian population.

In this paper the effect of age, Hb types and G-6-PD deficiency on height, weight and skinfold thickness among 1720 subjects belonging to Nava-Budha, Maratha and a mixed Scheduled caste of Maharashtra, India, have been examined using two models of analysis of variance. In the first model the factors used for explaining the variation are communities, age, sex, Hb types based on the total sample. In the second model another factor, G-6-PD deficiency, was introduced and only the male sample (n = 852) was considered. The age groups (assessed), sex and communities contribute highly significantly to the variation in weight. Variation in communities, age and sex is highly significant for variations in height and the three skinfold measurements. The effect of variation in Hb types is more than random for height and significant for biceps and triceps thicknesses. G-6-PD deficiency causes significant variation in height and the three skinfold measurements.

Ovarian steroidogenesis and development of fetuses following ochratoxin A treatment in pregnant rats.

Administration of ochratoxin A to pregnant rats from 6 to 12 days of gestation period, resulted in complete resorption of fetuses. On histological examination luteal degeneration was observed along with reduction in the weight of corpus luteum (mg/100 mg ovarian tissue) and pituitary gland. The enzyme delta 5-3 beta-hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase (delta 5-3 beta-OHD) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase were demonstrated histochemically in the ovary of pregnant rats. The activities of the enzymes were suppressed significantly in ochratoxin A treated rats. The same treatment also resulted in an accumulation of cholesterol and ascorbic acid in the ovary. Based on these results, it is suggested that resorption of fetuses in ochratoxin A treated rats may be related with a diminution in ovarian steroidogenesis possibly due to reduction in pituitary gonadotrophin secretion.

Onset of puberty and ovarian steroidogenesis following administration of ochratoxin A.

The present experimental design was set up to examine the effect of Ochratoxin A on the onset of reproductive maturity and the ovarian steroidogenic capacity by means of histochemical studies. Ochratoxin A treatment causes a remarkable delay in sexual maturation as evidenced by the age at vaginal opening and appearance of first estrus (cornifid smear). The same treatment also results in a significant diminution of the delta 5-3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity along with a reduction in the weight of ovary, uterus, and pituitary. On the basis of above data it is assumed that the probable cause of delayed maturation in Ochratoxin A treated rat is due to the suppressed ovarian steroidogenesis.

Histochemical determination of adrenal steroidogenesis in rat after treatment with ochratoxin A.

The enzymes delta 5-3 beta-hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase were demonstrated histochemically in the adrenal cortex of female rats. The activities of these enzymes were increased significantly in ochratoxin A treated rats along with an increase in the weight and reduction in cholesterol and ascorbic acid content of the gland. The observations suggest that after treatment with ochratoxin A, adrenal steroidogenesis was stimulated.

Evaluation of mass pulse immunization with oral polio vaccine in Delhi: is pre-registration of children necessary?

Delhi was the fourth State in India to conduct mass immunization of children (Pulse Polio Immunization) of the < 3 year age group with Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) as a strategy towards the eradication of poliomyelitis. This study attempted to evaluate the immunization coverage achieved and the channels of communication which were effective in increasing coverage in three high risk areas of Delhi during October 1994. The overall immunization coverage was 89%. Information sources like enumeration visits, posters, television, radio and schools statistically correlated with the Pulse Polio Immunization (PPI) outcome. However, the cost of enumeration was high. Other less expensive channels of communication appeared to be equally effective. Only 11% of the children surveyed were not immunized with PPI OPV. The major reasons why some children did not receive OPV was that parents were "not informed" or they were "too busy".

Peripheral blood mononuclear cells of patients with Indian visceral leishmaniasis suppress natural killer cell activity in vitro.

Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of patients with Indian visceral leishmaniasis (VL) suppressed the natural killer cell (NK) activity of normal human PBMC in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. Adherent monocytes, but not the non-adherent lymphocytes of VL patients suppressed NK activity through soluble mediators. The level of suppression seen in different patients was variable.

Age effects on infant mortality controlling for race: a meta-analytical study.

The relationship between teenage fertility and infant mortality has been a controversial issue for some time. From a policy point of view, it is crucial to understand the nature of this relationship given that pregnancy among teenagers is on the rise globally. This study conducted a meta-analysis of the relationship between maternal age and infant mortality. Two important determinants, race and age, were considered; no evidence of a systematic relationship between age and infant mortality rates was found. The policy implications of this finding are considered.

Biosocial factors influencing women to become prostitutes in India.

Based on materials collected during a study of risk factors associated with cervix cancer among prostitutes in Domjur, Howrah, West Bengal, this report explores various biosocial factors which may lead women to prostitution. When family and marital ties fail or disintegrate for various reasons, the life situations which a woman encounters may themselves generate a "process" of anchorlessness. The failure of family support along with the lack of ability to provide for themselves due to poverty and illiteracy were key factors why the women in this study had adopted prostitution.
