Current approaches to physician compensation.

Physician compensation plays a critical importance in the delivery of health care and the financial health of practices and payors. The choice of compensation methodologies impacts the use of health care resources, the splitting of revenues amongst groups, the incentive to provide more or less care and a variety of other medico-business behaviors. The health care industry overwhelmingly has concluded that the method of payment plays a major role in the types and amounts of services provided. From a counselor's perspective, it is critical to understand the pros and cons and the purposes of different compensation methods. Because the country is likely to end up with a mix of payment systems, it is also likely that practices and payors will continue to employ a mix of systems. In general, there one absolute right system exits. Rather, each practice should thoughtfully develop a system aimed at achieving the goals it desires.

Hospital and ambulatory surgery center syndications: selling interests to physicians.

Physician ownership in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers remains a relatively surefire method of protecting a portion of a facility's revenues. Implementation of a plan to broaden physician ownership requires compliance with legal and regulatory schemes. This article discusses the prototypical business terms of such transactions, outlines the process for completing such syndications, and analyzes the legal statutes that must be complied with in implementing the effort.

Long-term semantic priming: a computational account and empirical evidence.

Semantic priming is traditionally viewed as an effect that rapidly decays. A new view of long-term word priming in attractor neural networks is proposed. The model predicts long-term semantic priming under certain conditions. That is, the task must engage semantic-level processing to a sufficient degree. The predictions were confirmed in computer simulations and in 3 experiments. Experiment 1 showed that when target words are each preceded by multiple semantically related primes, there is long-lag priming on a semantic-decision task but not on a lexical-decision task. Experiment 2 replicated the long-term semantic priming effect for semantic decisions with only one prime per target. Experiment 3 demonstrated semantic priming with much longer word lists at lags of 0, 4, and 8 items. These are the first experiments to demonstrate a semantic priming effect spanning many intervening items and lasting much longer than a few seconds.
