O-I phage lysis in Salmonella species in India.

A total of 794 Salmonella strains, of 26 serotypes prevalent in India, were examined for sensitivity to O-I phage. Of 597 Salm. typhi strains, 13.6% proved resistant to phage lysis. Other serotypes which contained resistant strains are Salm. anatum, Salm. paratyphi A, Salm. typhimurium, Salm. chester, Salm. colombo and Salm. matopeni. The specificity of O-I phage lysis against other Enterobacteriaceae was also tested. The results of the study suggest that resistance to O-I phage lysis in Salmonella is more frequent than earlier studies have indicated, and that O-I phage lysis is highly specific for salmonellae and should be useful for the detection of new Salmonella serotypes.

Chloramphenicol resistance of Salmonella species in India, 1959-61.

Salmonella infections are quite frequent in India and are generally treated with chloramphenicol. In pursuance of a proposal of the WHO Expert Committee on Antibiotics, a survey has been made of the resistance to this antibiotic of 867 Salmonella strains isolated in India over the period 1959-61. It was found that most of the 24 serotypes studied were sensitive to 4-8 mug of chloramphenicol per ml of agar medium, although rather higher concentrations were required to kill some strains of Salm. paratyphi A and, particularly, of Salm. typhi. Analysis of the findings on Salm. typhi also indicate that its degree of resistance to chloramphenicol has increased over the years 1959-61.

Blood-level duration limit test of procaine benzylpenicillin in sheep.

Rabbits have commonly been used for testing the blood-level duration limit of penicillin, but have proved not to be entirely suitable. Experiments reported in this paper on the use of sheep suggest that these animals can be successfully used for the testing of procaine benzylpenicillin with aluminium monostearate (PAM).Penicillin levels were examined in the blood of 79 sheep 72 hours after intramuscular injection of 75 000 International Units of penicillin; 73 of the sheep sera showed a penicillin level corresponding to not less than 0.03 IU of penicillin per ml. The results are also reported of the comparative testing of four batches of penicillin for blood-level duration limits in both human subjects and sheep.
