Infrared thermography and ultrasonography to indirectly monitor the influence of liner type and overmilking on teat tissue recovery.

Eight Danish Holstein cows were milked with a 1-mm thick specially designed soft liner on their right rear teat and a standard liner mounted under extra high tension on their left rear teat. Four of the animals were overmilked for 5 min. Rear teats were subjected to ultrasound examination on the first day and to infrared thermography on the second day. Teats were submersed in ethanol 20 min post-milking on the second day. Ultrasonography measurements showed that teat canal length increased by 30-41% during milking. Twenty minutes after milking, teats milked with modified standard liners still had elongated teat canals while teats milked with the soft liner were normalized. Overmilking tended to increase teat wall thickness. Approximately 80% of variability in teat canal length, from before teat preparation to after milking, could be explained by changes during teat preparation. Thermography indicated a general drop in teat temperature during teat preparation. Teat temperature increased during milking and continued to increase until the ethanol challenge induced a significant drop. Temperatures approached pre-challenge rather than pre-milking temperatures within 10 minutes after challenge. Teat temperatures were dependent on type of liner. Mid-teat temperatures post-challenge relative to pre-teat preparation were dependent on overmilking. Thermography and ultrasound were considered useful methods to indirectly and non invasively evaluate teat tissue integrity.

Seasonal changes in the concentration of the major storage protein and its mRNA in xylem ray cells of poplar trees.

In the autumn large amounts of a major storage protein accumulate in the woody stem of poplar trees. This protein is stored in xylem ray cells during the winter season and is degraded in late spring. The accumulation of this protein is preceded by a dramatic but transient appearance of the corresponding mRNA. Thus, the seasonal change in the mRNA content appears to be a crucial event for the storage of nitrogen in the stem. The amino acid sequence of the storage protein has been deduced from the nucleotide sequence of a full-length cDNA. The cDNA shows a nucleotide sequence similarity of approximately 75% with two published cDNA sequences of poplar which represent transcripts that accumulate systemically in leaves of poplar trees in response to wounding.

Epidemiology of spinal cord lesions in Denmark.

Denmark has a population of about 5.2 million. The rehabilitation of spinal cord injured (SCI) takes place in two specialised rehabilitation hospitals. The incidence of new traumatic SCI admitted to these hospitals in the period 1975-1984 was 9.2 per million per year. During this period 92 Danes with non-traumatic and 268 with newly sustained traumatic spinal cord lesions were admitted to the rehabilitation hospital in Hornboek, which uptake area corresponded to South and East Denmark and Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Among the traumatic SCI 47% were due to traffic accidents, 23% to falls to a level below, 8% to attempted suicides, 6% to shallow water diving, and 6% to sporting accidents. The number of SCI caused by traffic accidents was found to decrease coincidently with the introduction of general speed limits and compulsory seat belt wearing. The male/female ratio was for the traumatic SCI 3.3, which was significantly lower than in the preceding 10-year period. 40% of all traumatic SCI were sustained at 15-24 years of age, and 51% had tetraplegia. Traffic accidents gave rise to more cervical, and falls to more caudal lesions. 41% of the traumatic SCI had an improvement in their neurological status after their admission to the neurosurgical department until the discharge from the rehabilitation hospital. Those with incomplete lesions showed greater improvement than those with complete lesions regardless of the level. Complete cervical lesions had significant better remissions than complete thoracic/lumbar lesions.

Leaf-specific thionins of barley-a novel class of cell wall proteins toxic to plant-pathogenic fungi and possibly involved in the defence mechanism of plants.

A novel class of highly abundant polypeptides with antifungal activity has been detected in cell walls of barley leaves. Similar polypeptides known as thionins occur not only in monocotyledonous but also in various dictoyledonous plants. The leaf-specific thionins of barley are encoded by a complex multigene family, which consists of at least 50-100 members per haploid genome. All of these genes are confined to chromosome 6. The toxicity of these thionins for plant pathogenic fungi and the fact that their synthesis can also be triggered by pathogens strongly suggest that thionins are a naturally occurring, inducible plant protein possibly involved in the mechanism of plant defence against microbial infections.

Food packaging: a consideration for procurement.

Food packaging information can benefit those involved with procurement of food products; however, available information is limited. A mail survey of 271 hospital administrative dietitians and 29 foodservice directors was conducted to investigate their perceptions and knowledge of food packaging functions, packaging information, and packaging materials and forms. Data from the 60 usable mail surveys indicate most participants perceived food packaging information as being beneficial for making purchasing decisions and that packaging has several important functions. However, participants appeared to possess limited knowledge about packaging materials and forms. Respondents were most knowledgeable about traditional packaging forms and materials vs. those developed more recently. Food packaging information should be made available to administrative foodservice personnel through publications and seminars or conferences.

Sterilization by vas occlusion without transection does not reduce postvasectomy sperm-agglutinating antibodies in serum. A randomized trial of vas occlusion versus vasectomy.

The influence of transection of the vasa on the increase in sperm-agglutinating activity in serum after vasectomy was investigated in a prospective randomized study. Sixty-eight males requesting vasectomy were allocated to either of two groups: vas occlusion by tantalum clips without transection of the vasa, or conventional vasectomy by transection and ligation. Sperm-agglutinating antibodies were determined by a micro-agglutination test before and 6 months after vasectomy or vas occlusion. A significant increase in sperm-agglutinating activity in serum after sterilization was found in both groups, but there was no intergroup difference.

Bladder function after abdominoperineal resection of the rectum for anorectal cancer. Urodynamic investigation before and after operative in a consecutive series.

In a consecutive series of 26 patients (10 men and 16 women) undergoing abdominoperineal resection of the rectum, cystometry and pressure-flow-EMG measurements were made preoperatively and three and 6-12 months after operation. Two patients developed neurogenic bladder paresis (7.7%, 95% c.l. 1-25%). Men with even slight complaints of bladder outlet obstruction preoperatively ran a risk of postoperative aggravation demanding surgery. In women no significant changes in micturition patterns were found. It is concluded that urinary flow measurement and cystometry should be available as minimum screening procedures after abdominoperineal resection of the rectum to detect bladder dysfunction at an early stage.

Phenoxybenzamine reduces bladder outlet obstruction in benign prostatic hyperplasia. A urodynamic investigation.

Nine patients with bladder outlet obstruction attributable to benign prostatic hyperplasia were treated with 15 mg of phenoxybenzamine daily. Spontaneous urinary flow, water cystometry, simultaneous pressure-flow-EMG, and the urethral closure pressure profile were measured before and at the end of 4 weeks of treatment with phenoxybenzamine. A significant reduction in residual urine volume and a significant increase in the first sensation and bladder capacity were found. All voiding pressure parameters were significantly reduced and flow rates significantly increased. Urethral closure pressure decreased significantly.

Increased abnormal urothelial cells in voided urine following excretory urography.

A prospective study of 45 consecutive patients scheduled for excretory urography demonstrated a statistically significant increase in the proportion of abnormal urothelial cells, including pseudomalignant cells, recovered in the urine between three hours and seven days after urography. The total number of urothelial cells recovered in the urine did not increase at any time. The Millipore filter imprint technique, which allows semiquantitative examination of urothelial cells from urine, is discussed.
