Ureaplasma urealyticum strains isolated from urethral specimens of 112 patients with nongonococcal urethritis, 17 with gonorrhea, and 33 asymptomatic carriers (controls) were tested by the growth-inhibition test with standard ureaplasma antisera (serotypes 1-8). Cases with more than one serotype (two to four types) were encountered in 36.6% of patients with nongonococcal urethritis, 29.4% of those with gonorrhea, and 21.2% of controls. The most frequently recovered serotypes were type 4 from patients with nongonococcal urethritis (57.1%) and type 2 from patients with gonorrhea and controls (35.2% and 36.3%, respectively). The difference in frequency of serotype 4 between patients with nongonococcal urethritis and controls was statistically significant (P less than .001). An additional serotyping with types 9 and 10 antisera of the nontypable strains from patients with nongonococcal urethritis and controls (17.8% and 21.2%, respectively) revealed three type-9 strains. The results show a need for utilization of serotyping of U. urealyticum in studies of the epidemiology and transmissibility of genital infections with U. urealyticum.
Development of replacement cell therapies awaits the identification of factors that regulate nuclear reprogramming and the mechanisms that control stem cell renewal and differentiation. Once such factors and signals will begin to be elucidated, new technologies will have to be envisaged where uniform differentiation of adult or embryonic stem cells along one differentiation pathway can be induced. Controlled differentiation of stem cells will require the engineering of niches and extracellular signal combinations that would amplify a particular signaling network and allow uniform and selective differentiation. Three recent advances in stem cell research open the possibility to approach engineering studies for cell replacement therapies. Fusion events between stem cells and adult cells or between adult and embryonic stem cells have been shown to result in altered fates and nuclear reprogramming of cell hybrids. Hematopoietic stem cells were shown to require Wnt signaling in order to renew. The purification of Wnt proteins would allow their use as exogenous purified cytokines in attempts to amplify stem cells before bone marrow transplantation. The homeodomain protein Nanog has been shown to be crucial for the embryonic stem cell renewal and pluripotency. However, the cardinal question of how stemness is preserved in the early embryo and adult stem cells remains opened.

On the basis of experimental studies and of the results obtained, the authors have applied over the last two years, sclerosis of the gastric mucosa with fresh, sterile solution of hypertonic (66%) glucose in 25 patients with duodenal ulcers and cellular and vagal hyperacidity resistant to medical therapy. Mucosclerosis was associated with gastric drainage in 14 patients with duodenal ulcer complicated by stenosis or hemmorhage. Sclerosis of the gastric mucosa is a physiological intervention because it achieves the sclero-atrophy of the acid-secreting glands and vago-sympatic denervation in the gastric territory, while the storage function of the stomach is maintained. It was not followed by extra-gastric disturbances or antro-pyloric distonia. It is easy to perform from the technical viewpoint and has a high degree of fiability, providing constantly satisfactory clinical, functional and metabolic results. Chemical values of basal secretion have decreased in a constant manner but in 9 patients the values of induced acidity showed inconstant decreases. Gastro-antro-pyloro-duodenal transit was good and all operated patients have gained weight. No diarrhea, dumping or peptic recidives were noted.

The biology of the myocardial fiber was studied under experimental conditions similar to angina and the premonitory syndrome of myocardial infarction. The morphophysiologic data obtained particularly concerning the mitochondria demonstrated that affection of the myocardium by progressive ischaemia induced less severe lesions than the abrupt onset of ischaemia, also lowering the frequency of ventricular fibrillations.
