Self-evaluation and its relationship to clinical evaluation.

An exploratory study was undertaken in a three-year nursing diploma program to determine instructor and student perceptions of self-evaluation (SE) and its relationship to clinical evaluation. A cross-section of instructors (n = 9) participated in three rounds of a Delphi survey. From this validated data base a questionnaire was developed and distributed to a stratified sample of 145 students. Combined results were then analyzed and compared. Results indicated that both students and instructors perceive self-evaluation more positively than negatively and they see the main purpose as providing direction for learning. Contrary to the literature and perceptions of surveyed instructors, students did not perceive self-evaluation as a factor in promotion of professional growth. Although students value a participatory role in clinical evaluation, the process of self-evaluation generates anxiety and underrating of performance. The authors conclude that self-evaluation is a developmental skill requiring guidelines and practice, and offer recommendations for its use.

Electrochemical determination of hemoglobin, hematocrit, and hemolysis.

Novel electrochemical methods have been developed for determination of total hemoglobin, hematocrit, and detection of hemolysis in whole blood. Hemoglobin is measured through its peroxidase activity, a fluoride ion-selective electrode being used to monitor the rate of fluoride ion production from the oxidation of an organofluorine compound. Results agree well with those obtained with the cyanmethemoglobin method (r = 0.970). Hematocrit is determined from the ratio of the sodium ion concentrations measured with an ion-selective electrode before and after lysis of the erythrocytes. Results by this and the microhematocrit method correlated well (r = 0.987). Hemolysis in a whole-blood sample is detected by using an oxygen electrode to measure the oxygen released when hemoglobin in plasma is oxidized.

Self-evaluation for nursing students.

Self-evaluation skills are believed to promote professional development, enhance self-esteem, and develop self-awareness, but nursing students are not taught these skills in any systematic way. Collaborative evaluation techniques provide nursing educators with a framework for teaching students essential self-evaluation skills.

Blood pressure screening clinics: an opportunity for health promotion.

A blood pressure clinic was organized in a newly developed community in an urban setting. While the primary purpose was to measure and interpret blood pressure (BP), special emphasis was placed on creating awareness of normal/abnormal BP. The study was also designed to identify health education activities performed by nurses in a BP clinic. Following an orientation program and using standardized protocol, volunteer nurses screened 671 adults with a mean age of 43.7 years. The additional activities performed by nurses are described and include 72 documented instances of health teaching, 111 referrals for elevated BP, and 32 referrals for other health problems. The results indicate that nurses provided valuable services in meeting consumer health care needs, and suggest that a BP clinic can be an effective and efficient vehicle for health promotion activities.
