Correlation of tartrazine hypersensitivity with specific serum IgD levels.

The clinical diagnosis of hypersensitivity to the food dye tartrazine in 16 subjects correlated with levels of tartrazine-specific IgD antibodies determined by a solid phase radioimmunoassay inhibition test. This is the first study associating hypersensitivity to a low molecular weight chemical with an antibody response of the IgD class. There was little or no correlation between clinical sensitivity and IgE antibodies.

Hypersensitivity to tartrazine (FD&C Yellow No. 5) and other dyes and additives present in foods and pharmaceutical products.

Tartrazine (FD&C Yellow No. 5) and other allowed certified color additives may have an exacerbating effect in chronic urticaria and asthma sufferers. In the individual patient the only way to determine their relevance is to administer test doses. By altering doses, timing and substances and by interspacing controls a battery of tests has been developed. Methods of testing for sensitization to food additives and analgesics are described.

Reactions to hidden agents in foods and drugs can be serious.

Agents used to color, flavor, preserve or identify medication frequently used in the treatment of allergic diseases may in themselves produce severe allergic or toxic reactions. Some cross-react with Aspirin. Aminopyrine, Indomethacin (indocin), Mefensmic Acid (ponstel) to which an allergic patient may be sensitive. Three case reports are presented.
