[Creatine kinase in patients with diabetes mellitus].

In 72 diabetic patients the serum levels of creatine kinase (CK) and its isoenzyme MB were examined together with the levels of other enzymes most frequently examined in practice. A transient elevation of the CK level, mainly of the muscular isoenzyme, was found in 12.5% of the patients examined. In none of these patients lesions of the myocardium, thyroid gland or the striated muscles, which could explain the rise of CK, were found. There was a moderate correlation between the degree of glycemia and the CK elevation but there was no such correlation with other enzymes. With improvement of the carbohydrate metabolism the CK level became normal. The possible pathogenic mechanisms for the rise of the CK level in diabetes mellitus are discussed. The limited number of the patients examined does not allow final conclusions about these mechanisms.

[Determination of angiotensin-converting enzyme activity in internal diseases].

A convenient and reliable colorimetric method for determination of serum angiotensin-converting enzyme is worked out by modifying the method of Niels and al. Reference serum ranges of 15.45-191.2 ME/L are established in a control group of 46 healthy persons. In pulmonary sarcoidosis statistically significantly higher angiotensin-converting enzyme activity than in the healthy controls is found while in pulmonary cancer and other pulmonary diseases the angiotensin-converting enzyme activity is in the reference ranges. The importance of angiotensin-converting enzyme as a laboratory index for the early diagnosis of pulmonary sarcoidosis is discussed.

[The information value of indices of the mathematical analysis of heart rhythm in noise exposure].

The effect of noise on the vegetative nervous system is well-studied. In a laboratory room simulating operator's box 6 subjects were exposed fourfold to white noise with intensity 95 dB/A. The indices of the cardiac rhythm were measured for 10 minutes, threefold, during all exposures, except the first. The measurements were before the beginning of the noise exposure, from the 5th to the 15th minute after starting and at the end (the exposure continues 135 min.). It was established that the effect of noise on the cardiac rhythm indices is most strongly expressed in the beginning. At the end of the exposure the traced indices show a tendency towards level off with the initial data. A conclusion is made that the nearly unknown, in our country, indices of the mathematical analysis of the cardiac rhythm possess high information concerning the noise hazard.

[Changes in the physiological and biochemical parameters of students during an examination].

During exercises /control/ and examination on work psychology /experiment/ were investigated the cardiac frequency, blood supply of extremities, peripheral vessel tone, velocity of pulse wave spreading, EKG, pulse variety, skin resistance, excretion of adrenaline, noradrenaline, 11-OCS and other parameters. It was established that an examination is a good model of studying the changes during stress. Characteristic intersexual and interindividual differences were found. The work is part of a broad investigation on the relation between rate of stress, changes in the organism, success, spirits, subjective perception of tenseness, individual importance of the situation, the degree of training, etc.

[Importance of the phonetic structure of words for their intelligibility under noisy conditions].

It was exeperimentally established that the understanding of the one- and two-syllable words depends on their phonetic structure (the presence of definite combinations of letters) as well as on the place of the accent. The force of the pronouncing of the separate words was also established not to essentially affect their understanding. The work is aimed at the working out an operator's word stock so that the words easily vulnerable by noise to be substituted for their synonyms or avoided.

[Comparative studies of the reliability of results in determining blood glucose by 2 methods].

Comparative studies are reported on the reliability of the results in the determination of blood glucose by glucosooxidase-peroxidase and o-toluidine methods. Both methods have a good correlation. r = 0.9575 with n = 61. The results indicate that the GOD/POD method and o-toluidine method have a good reproducibility in time and series and high accuracy. Due to the poorer toxicity of GOD/POD-method its broader implementation in routine practice is recommended.

[Diagnostic significance of lysozymuria in chronic pyelonephritis].

Lysozymuria was studied in 70 patients with chronic pyelonephritis with preserved renal function and two groups of 18 patients each with pyelonephritis, with chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) and glomerulonephritis without CRI. Elevated value of lysozyme in urine was obtained in 40% of the patients with chronic pyelonephritis with preserved renal function and in 66.6% of those with chronic pyelonephritis in the stage of a chronic renal insufficiency. Lysozyme level in urine is in a correlation dependence on serum creatinine level. Lysozymuria is more frequent among patients with pyelonephritis with significant bacteriuria as well as among patients not treated with uroantiseptics. Lysozymuris is present in two patients with nephrotic syndrome from the patient group with glomerulonephritis and in two with probable not complicated chronic pyelonephritis.

[Comparative laparoscopic, bioptic and clinical enzymological studies in liver cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases].

The activity of GOT, GPT, APh, liver APh, gamma GTP, AAP and serum cholinesterase were determined in 80 patients with chronic liver diseases, diagnosed clinically, laparoscopically and by liver biopsy. Out of the patients with liver cirrhosis (51), those with portal cirrhosis (40) have a considerably higher activity of gamma GTP, intestinal APh than the patients with postecrotic cirrhosis (11). Cholinesterase activity is markedly lower in patients with cirrhosis and ascites than in the patients without ascites. With the histological data about the activity gamma GTP and GOT are considerably higher without activity. Examinations were carried out also upon patients with chronic aggressive hepatitis (4), chronic persisting hepatitis (9), liver cancer (12) and liver steatosis (4). The data revealed that the majority of the enzymes are with a higher sensitivity (especially gamma GTP, GOT, liver APh, cholinesterase) but with more restricted diagnostic and differential-diagnostic potentialities in view of the great dispersion of the enzyme activities with the separate liver diseases.
