FISH approach to determine cat eye syndrome chromosome breakpoints of a patient with cat eye syndrome type II.

We report a 19-year-old man with craniofacial dysmorphic features, anorectal malformations, eye colobomas, orthopaedic anomalies, and mild neurodevelopmental delay. Cat eye syndrome (CES) was suspected, and confirmed by cytogenetic analysis which showed the presence of a supernumerary bisatellited chromosome, identified by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) as invdup(22). The marker was further analyzed with six BAC clones located at the 22q11.1 and 22q11.2 regions; this analysis allowed correct assignment at low copy repeat 4 on chromosome 22 (LCR22-4) of the two breakpoints, confirming the presence of a CES chromosome type II. The patient's phenotype is considered in the light of the cytogenetic, and FISH investigations results and other patients reported in literature. Molecular definition of the breakpoints at the LCR22-4 copy confirms the role of different chromosome 22-specific LCRs in CES chromosomes generation, as well as in other chromosome 22 germ line rearrangements. Our report confirms that, unlike other conditions, i.e. the invdup(15) bisatellited dicentric marker, the CES phenotype does not appear to correlate with the size of the marker chromosome. Additional cases are necessary to be able to draw more specific genotype-phenotype correlations and to determine the outcome of patients with CES, especially when this rare condition is diagnosed in prenatal age.

[Mastoid osteomas: review of literature and presentation of 2 clinical cases].

The authors report two cases of mastoid osteoma in patients at the "S. Filippo Neri" Hospital in Rome, Italy. The literature on this topic is critically reviewed. This review includes the 48 cases between 1875 and 1955 reported by Kecht, as well as the 92 cases Probst reported in 1991 in a review running from 1861. The literature published since 1991 has presented eight cases which, when added to the two presented here and the 92 indicated by Probst, total 102 cases of mastoid osteoma. The most widely accepted theories on the etiopathogenesis of mastoid osteoma are presented. These include: embryogenesis, metaplasia, inflammation, and trauma. The conclusions underline the complications of this disorder which are mainly linked to osteoma growth, and the importance of the differential diagnosis with other mastoid lesions for which prognosis is poorer.

A balanced complex chromosomal rearrangement (BCCR) with phenotypic effect.

The authors report on a case of balanced complex chromosomal rearrangement (BCCR) with phenotypic effect, describe the dysmorphisms and malformations observed, and discuss the various pathogenetic mechanisms. On the basis of these considerations, they underline the need for careful reporting of examined cases, distinguishing the characteristic signs from dysmorphisms that are described in several other chromosomal aberrations as well. Finally, they stress the importance of a more precise description of BCCRs for the purpose, among others, of a correct formulation of reproductive risk.

A male patient with 48,XXYY syndrome: importance of distinction from Klinefelter's syndrome.

The authors report a patient affected with mental retardation, dysarthria, bilateral testicular hypoplasia and extensive ulcers of the lower limbs. Clinical study and laboratory tests revealed 48,XXYY syndrome. The authors confirm the importance of differential diagnosis from Klinefelter syndrome, illustrating the parameters and the pathology of both syndromes. They discuss the hypotheses concerning the pathogenesis of the ulcerations, and stress the importance of clinical and genetic characterization, leading to a differentiated prognosis of social capacity and prospect of working.

[Endodermal sinus tumor. Histological changes induced by chemotherapy].

The case of a child affected at birth sacrococcygeal teratoma is reported. Twenty-eight months following surgical resection, the tumor relapsed locally and liver metastases occurred. A biopsy of the sacrococcygeal mass was performed and histologic examination proved it to be an endodermal sinus (yolk sac) tumor. Chemotherapy consisting of etoposide and high-dose carboplatin was started. When a second operation was performed the mass had disappeared and the macroscopically involved areas of liver were removed. Histologic examination demonstrated that the complete necrosis of the tumor was partially replaced by a fibrous scar tissue. The child underwent adjuvant chemotherapy and now is in complete remission fourteen months after the last operation.

[Computerized system for the acquisition and analysis of bioelectric waves].

With collaboration of medicals, electronics and informatics; we have evaluated a method destined to be a potent instrument for the analysis and store of bioelectrical signal. The signal can be taken directly from the subjects or from a tape recorder; we can call again stored for evaluating the gradient grade, the integral and other mathematical evaluations of traits of a curves; in example EEG, EOG, PEV, etc.

[Evaluations of respiratory functional parameters in sponge fishers from the island of Kalimnos (Greece)].

We had intended to study functional respiratory patterns of a sponge-divers group from the Island of Kalymnos (Greece). Such a group constitutes a very homogeneous sample for dietary habits and underwater activity, handed down from father to son. Some of these sponge-divers dives holding his breath; others use "narghilè", a special apparatus consisting in a nosepiece connected to an air compressor placed in the boat. As their activity is continuative and prolonged for several months in the years with repeated dives from dawn to dusk, and because air output of narghilè is nearly constant, it is possible to deduce that in these subjects functional respiratory modifications are occurred. After evaluated three groups (skindivers, narghilè-divers and control-group) we didn't notice any particular change of static and dynamic pulmonary volumes. Only Expiratory Reserve Volume is higher in spite to Knudson's values; this is probably due to psychological and emotional factors.
