Short-term ischemia on the microvascular level in the rat intestine mesentery was induced by occlusion of the a. mesenterica superior or regional supplying arteriole for 1 or 10 min. No substantial disturbances of blood flow velocity and hematocrit occurred in microvessels after 1 min occlusion, whereas the blood flow cessation for 10 min was followed by a decrease of flow velocity in microvessels under study and development of thrombosis at the site of arteriole occlusion.
Using the fluorescence technique it has been shown that rats predisposed to the development of experimental alcoholism have a higher permeability of mesenterial microvessels as compared to non-predisposed animals. The role of enzymes and the endothelium in the mechanisms of permeability is discussed.
Using an instrument designed by the Ernst Leitz Wetzlar Company (FRG) red blood cell velocity was evaluated in model and intravital experiments. The instrument provides for an accurate quantitative determination of blood microflow velocity, enables the measurements within a wide range of velocities and diameters of microvessels. It is more unsophisticated as regards the design and operation than other instruments intended for similar purposes.
