Running effective meetings, running effective groups.

Meetings are effective if they meet the objectives of each person involved in the least amount of time possible. Different strategies are needed for different types of meetings. Different leadership styles are necessary depending on the members' personality preferences and the stages of the group's development. Good leaders know how to adapt to these preferences and stages.

Politics and the nurse manager.

Sometimes, the "games being played" in our job settings cripple our ability to be powerful, effective participants in the world of work. Power, which is the ability to obtain, retain and move resources, requires two sets of attributes: competence and political savoir-faire. Much attention is given to improving competence but little time is spent in learning the intricacies of political behavior. The most important strategy is to learn to "read the environment" through observation, listening, reading, detachment and analysis.

Positive politics: playing corporate games with personal integrity.

The desire for power is personal. Competence and political intelligence are the prerequisites for handling power in a healthy manner. Politics is not a nasty word or a set of behaviors that inevitably turns you into a shady character of whom your mother would be ashamed. You need never divorce your own morality from the situation. The choice to improve your political functioning is yours. You always retain the right to play, and you retain the right to decide when to play. But you are a better manager, a better professional, and a more educated person if you can identify what others are doing and how their behavior will impact you. It is not just for success, it is for survival--success and survival on your own terms.
