X-ray diffraction study of liquid Cs up to 9.8 GPa.

We describe an x-ray diffraction study of liquid Cs at high pressure and temperature conducted in order to characterize the structural changes associated with the complex melting curve and phase transitions observed in the solid phases. At 3.9 GPa we observe a discontinuity in the density of the liquid accompanied by a decrease in the coordination number from about 12 to 8, which marks a change to a nonsimple liquid. The specific volume of liquid Cs, combined with structural analysis of the diffraction data, strongly suggest the existence of dsp(3) electronic hybridization above 3.9 GPa, similar to that reported on compression in the crystalline phase.

Nature of the first-order phase transition in fluid phosphorus at high temperature and pressure.

An in situ x-ray diffraction experiment has been performed on phosphorus to characterize the liquid-liquid transition which occurs at high temperature and pressure. The transition line has been measured over an extended temperature range up to 2200 degrees C at 0.3 GPa. From the shape of this line, a thermodynamic characterization of the transition is obtained in terms of latent heat and internal energy change. Moreover, the addition of the high-pressure high-temperature data to the known phase diagram of phosphorus allows us to conclude that this is a first-order transition between a dense molecular fluid and a polymeric liquid.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) study of 691 pathological specimens from Quebec by PCR-direct sequencing approach.

Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are etiological agents of cervical cancer. In order to address clinical demand for HPV detection and sequence typing, mostly in pre-cancerous cervical lesions, we applied our two-tier PCR-direct sequencing (PCR-DS) approach based on the use of both MY09/MY11 and GP5 + /GP6 + sets of primers. We tested 691 pathological specimens, all of which were biopsies, 75% of which were diagnosed histologically as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grades I-III. In total, 484 samples (70%) tested HPV-positive, yielding 531 HPV sequences from 47 HPV types, including two novel types. Four most frequently found HPV types accounted for 52.9% of all isolates: HPV6, 16, 11, and 31 (21.5%, 20.0%, 7.0%, and 4.5%, respectively). Some interesting results are the following: all currently known high-risk HPV (14 types) and low-risk HPV (6 types) were detected; HPV18 was not the 1st or 2nd but rather the 4th-5th most frequent high-risk HPV type; the highest detection rate for HPV (86%) among samples suspected to be HPV-infected was found in the youngest age group (0-10 years old), including 70% (44/63) "genital" HPV types; HPV types of undetermined cervical cancer risk represented 19% and of the total HPV isolates but were strongly increased in co-infections (36.5% of all isolates). To our knowledge, this is the largest sequencing-based study of HPV. The HPV types of unknown cancer risk, representing the majority of the known HPV types, 27 of the 47 types detected in this study, are not likely to play a major role in cervical cancer because their prevalence in CIN-I, II, and III declines from 16% to 8% to 2.5%. The two-tier PCR-DS method provides greater sensitivity than cycle sequencing using only one pair of primers. It could be used in a simple laboratory setting for quick and reliable typing of known and novel HPV from clinical specimens with fine sequence precision. It could also be applied to anti-cancer vaccine development.

[Sedation with continuously infused propofol in caudal block for elective pediatric surgery].

Twenty-nine patients aged between 2 months and 6 years, undergoing general surgery under regional analgesia (caudal block) combined with continuous infusion of propofol (3 mg/kg/h), were studied. During anesthesia the heart rate, the arterial pressure, the SaO2 and respiratory rate were recorded; the electrocardiogram was continuously displayed and all side-effects occurring during maintenance and recovery from anesthesia were noted. Satisfactory sedation without significant respiratory and cardiovascular depression and a rapid recovery, was observed. In conclusion, we feel that the use of combined caudal block and continuous infusion of propofol for paediatric surgery is rational.

[Possible effects of pharmacologic prophylaxis for Mendelson's syndrome on newborns].

Forty-eight newborn infants whose mothers underwent both elective and urgent caesarean section were studied. Mothers were randomly assigned to one of the treatment groups for the prophylaxis of Aspiration Pneumonitis: group A was treated with ranitidine, 50 mg i.v.; group B with ranitidine, 50 mg, and metoclopramide, 10 mg i.v.; group C no medication. Neonatal assessment included Apgar score and various haematological laboratory tests: haemogasanalysis, glycemia, electrolites, hematocrit, hemoglobin, bilirubinemia, SGOT, SGPT. Nor clinical or statistic differences were noted among the three infant groups.

[Propofol versus thiopentone. A hemodynamic study].

The authors, after a brief introduction concerning the importance of the use of NCCOM3 (Non invasive Continuous Cardiac Output Monitor) for the non invasive assessment of the haemodynamic parameters (Cardiac Output, Heart Rate, Ventricular Ejection Time, Stroke Volume), compare the haemodynamic variations induced by two types of intravenous anesthesia in 40 patients, selected at random, who underwent anesthesia for minor gynaecological procedures in the day hospital. The results obtained show that the haemodynamic variations induced by thiopentone and propofol are almost analogues until the end of surgery, while a difference, even though statistically non significant, was observed at the moment of reawakening. The authors would like to underline the synergism of two drugs and fentanyl as regards to the depressive effects on blood circulation.
