[Oral ulcerative lesions in young adults].

Following a general discussion of the pathological and clinical aspects of recurring oral ulcerative lesions most frequently observed in dentistry, the paper illustrates a few typical and atypical clinical cases. In conclusion, the authors make a few comments on the differential diagnosis and therapy of these diseases.

Host-guest complexation in capillary isotachophoresis. II. Determination of aminophenol and diaminobenzene isomers in permanent hair colorants by using capillary isotachophoresis.

The separation of 2-, 3- and 4-aminophenol and 1,2-, 1,3- and 1,4-diaminobenzene is studied by using capillary isotachophoresis. In order to obtain complete resolution of the six cations beta-cyclodextrin was used. The analytical method was used for the determination of aminophenol and diaminobenzene isomers in permanent hair colorant creams.

Use of cyclodextrins for the enantioselective separation of ergot alkaloids by capillary zone electrophoresis.

Ergot alkaloid enantiomer derivatives were resolved using capillary zone electrophoresis. The effect of cyclodextrins, added to the background electrolyte, on the migration time and the resolution was studied. Good separation for epimeric ergot alkaloid derivatives was also obtained using phosphate buffer at pH 2.5. Separation was improved by supplementing the background electrolyte with 30 mM of gamma-cyclodextrin. Good resolution of racemic ergot alkaloid derivatives in their enantiomers was achieved in a background electrolyte containing either beta-cyclodextrin or its derivative, or gamma-cyclodextrin.

Enantiomers resolution in capillary zone electrophoresis by using cyclodextrins.

Cyclodextrins added to the background electrolyte are shown to be useful for the resolution of racemic compounds in their enantiomers. Several parameters have to be controlled in order to achieve resolution, e.g., cyclodextrin type, concentration, analyte shape, as well as column temperature. The resolution of nor-epinephrine, epinephrine and isoproterenol in their enantiomers decreased by increasing the column temperature. Octopamine and ketamine have been resolved by supporting the background electrolyte with 2, 6-di-O-methyl-beta-cyclodextrin. In spite of the stronger inclusion-complex of ketamine than octopamine with the modified cyclodextrin its resolution was not satisfactory.

Atrazine and simazine determination in river water samples by micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography.

A rapid and sensitive micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography analytical method was used for the determination of chlorotriazine herbicides in river water samples. Several electrolyte systems in the pH range 7-10 were tested in order to optimize the separation. The two compounds were separated in less than 10 min and the determination limit was about 0.4 ppb for each herbicide. Recovery values of the method were in the range 80%-117%.

Tissue reactions, fluids, and bacterial infiltration in implants retrieved at autopsy: a case report.

A 72-year-old patient underwent the placement of 2 screw-type implants. After 5 months the patient died of a massive stroke, and a block section of the portion of the mandible containing the implants was done. The specimen was treated to obtain thin ground sections. A 1- to 5-micron gap was present between the implant and the healing cover screw, and this space was filled by bacteria and calculus; bacteria were also present in the most apical portion of the hollow part of the implant. An inflammatory infiltrate was present in the connective peri-implant tissues. The spaces between all implant components (implant, abutment, and healing screw) can act as conduits and reservoirs for bacteria, which could cause inflammation of the peri-implant soft tissues. In conclusion, the histologic data from this autopsy case may help to confirm the penetration by fluids and bacteria into the internal portion of the implants, obtained from previous in vitro and in vivo studies.

Immunocytochemical detection of hMSH2 and hMLH1 expression in oral melanoma.

BACKGROUND: The DNA mismatch repair system (MMR) plays an important role in the maintenance of genomic stability. To date few studies have been performed on hMSH2 and hMLH1 expression and melanoma of the head and neck region. A study of two cases revealed no mutations of the mismatch repair genes hMSH2 and hMLH1. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To verify the possibility of implication of hMSH2 and hMLH1 alterations in melanocytic cancerogenesis, the authors examined the protein expression pattern of hMSH2 and hMLH1 by immunohistochemistry in 9 paraffin-embedded oral melanoma. RESULTS: One case (11%) showed nuclear positivity for hMSH2, 3 cases (33%) showed cytoplasmic positivity, and five cases (55%) showed no staining in the tumoral cells, even if normal squamous epithelium available in this section showed a nuclear positivity. Four cases (44%) showed no hMLH1 staining in the tumoral cells, even if normal squamous epithelium available in this section showed a nuclear positivity. Two cases (22%) showed nuclear positivity, and three cases (33%) showed cytoplasmic positivity. CONCLUSIONS: The analysis of mismatch repair genes can be a new molecular diagnostic tools for the detection of patients at high risk of developing melanoma and other neoplasia, or metastasis and recurrences.
