Eosinophilic gastroenteritis in a domestic ferret.

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis without peripheral eosinophilia was diagnosed histologically in a 5-year-old neutered male ferret showing acute signs of projectile vomiting, dark mucoid diarrhea, and chronic weight loss for 2 mo. The ferret was clinically normal after 4 days of treatment with parenteral fluids, antibiotics, and corticosteroids.

Surgical treatment of mitral valve disease: late results with valve replacement.

Computer aided data processing of the results of surgery in 504 patients with mitral (and mitral + aortic + tricuspid) valvular disease, operated on by the Szeged cardiosurgery group between 1966-1983 are discussed. Late results after valve surgery are investigated from the point of view of survival time, functional state and social rehabilitation. Statistical evaluation of postoperative complications and the functional life-time of the Cross-Jones prosthesis are reported. The functional rehabilitation following the operation is mathematically assessed.

Leukocyte migration test for the study of immune reactivity in cases of Graves disease associated with infiltrative ophthalmopathy.

The leukocyte migration test was carried out in 26 untreated cases of Graves disease, using crude thyroid extract, human eye muscle antigen and actomyosin as antigens. A significant reduction in the spontaneous (antigen-free) migration values was demonstrable in the cases of Graves disease, compared with the controls. The migration inhibition test gave positive results with the thyroid antigen in the hyperthyroid cases, in opposition to euthyroid ophthalmopathy, where it was found negative. The results were positive with retrobulbar muscle antigen in hyperthyroid and euthyroid infiltrative ophthalmopathy. In advanced cases of infiltrative ophthalmopathy, the results were positive with actomyosin as well.

Leukocyte migration inhibition in vitro in untreated and methimazole-treated patients with Graves disease.

The leukocyte migration tests has been applied to investigate immune-reactivity of 43 untreated and methimazole-treated patients against thyroid crude antigen. A significant migration inhibition was observed in 21 untreated patients, while in 22 methimazole-treated patients the migration test was negative independently of T3 suppressibility. Migration inhibition against thyroid antigen and purified protein derivative (PPD) was reduced or abolished after preincubation with methimazole of leukocytes of untreated patients. It seems that methimazole-treatment influences not only thyroid iodine metabolism, but by means of a direct effect on lymphocytes it also decreases the pathological stimulation.

Inhibition of spontaneous E-rosetting by antithymocyte globulin in Graves disease.

The number of thymus-dependent (T) lymphocytes and the concentrations of antithymocyte-globulin causing 25% inhibition of E-rosetting were determined in 40 cases of Graves disease. No significant difference in T-lymphocyte count was found between the test groups and the control group. An increased resistance of T-lymphocytes to antithymocyte globulin was found in Graves disease, particularly in its form marked by progressive ophthalmopathy. The increase in resistance was significant in the first five years of the disease.
