Fano resonances with discrete breathers.

A theoretical study of linear wave scattering by time-periodic spatially localized excitations (discrete breathers) is presented. A peculiar effect of total reflection occurs due to a Fano resonance when a localized state originating from closed channels resonates with the open channel. For the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger chain, we give an analytical result for the frequency dependence of the transmission coefficient, including the possibility of resonant reflection. We extend the analysis to chains of weakly coupled anharmonic oscillators and discuss the relevance of the effect for electronic transport spectroscopy of mesoscopic systems.

Wave scattering by discrete breathers.

We present a theoretical study of linear wave scattering in one-dimensional nonlinear lattices by intrinsic spatially localized dynamic excitations or discrete breathers. These states appear in various nonlinear systems and present a time-periodic localized scattering potential for plane waves. We consider the case of elastic one-channel scattering, when the frequencies of incoming and transmitted waves coincide, but the breather provides with additional spatially localized ac channels whose presence may lead to various interference patterns. The dependence of the transmission coefficient on the wave number q and the breather frequency Omega(b) is studied for different types of breathers: acoustic and optical breathers, and rotobreathers. We identify several typical scattering setups where the internal time dependence of the breather is of crucial importance for the observed transmission properties.

Resonant scattering of solitons.

We study the scattering of solitons in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on local inhomogeneities which may give rise to resonant transmission and reflection. In both cases, we derive resonance conditions for the soliton's velocity. The analytical predictions are tested numerically in regimes characterized by various time scales. Special attention is paid to intermode interactions and their effect on coherence, decoherence, and dephasing of plane-wave modes which build up the soliton.

Broken space-time symmetries and mechanisms of rectification of ac fields by nonlinear (non)adiabatic response.

We consider low-dimensional dynamical systems exposed to a heat bath and to additional ac fields. The presence of these ac fields may lead to a breaking of certain spatial or temporal symmetries, which in turn cause nonzero averages of relevant observables. Nonlinear (non)adiabatic response is employed to explain the effect. We consider a case of a particle in a periodic potential as an example and discuss the relevant symmetry breakings and the mechanisms of rectification of the current in such a system.

Broken symmetries and directed collective energy transport in spatially extended systems.

We study the appearance of directed energy current in homogeneous spatially extended systems coupled to a heat bath in the presence of an external ac field E(t). The systems are described by nonlinear field equations. By making use of a symmetry analysis, we predict the right choice of E(t) and obtain directed energy transport for systems with a nonzero topological charge Q. We demonstrate that the symmetry properties of motion of topological solitons (kinks and antikinks) are equivalent to the ones for the energy current. Numerical simulations confirm the predictions of the symmetry analysis and, moreover, show that the directed energy current drastically increases as the dissipation parameter alpha reduces.

Magnetic-field-induced control of breather dynamics in a single plaquette of Josephson junctions.

We present a theoretical study of inhomogeneous dynamic (resistive) states in a single plaquette consisting of three Josephson junctions. Resonant interactions of such a breather state with electromagnetic oscillations manifest themselves by resonant current steps and voltage jumps in the current-voltage characteristics. An externally applied magnetic field leads to a variation of the relative shift between the Josephson current oscillations of two resistive junctions. By making use of the rotation wave approximation analysis and direct numerical simulations we show that this effect allows to effectively control the breather instabilities, e.g., to increase (decrease) the height of the resonant steps and to suppress the voltage jumps in the current-voltage characteristics.

Shape profile of compactlike discrete breathers in nonlinear dispersive lattice systems.

We study the spatial decay profile of compactlike discrete breathers in nonlinear dispersive lattices. We show that the core region of such nonlinear localized excitations can be described by a cosinelike spatial shape while the tail region decays with a faster than exponential law, such as a superexponential one. We discuss the relation of the tail decay to properties of space-time separability.

Breathers in Josephson junction ladders: resonances and electromagnetic wave spectroscopy.

We present a theoretical study of the resonant interaction between dynamical localized states (discrete breathers) and linear electromagnetic excitations (EE's) in Josephson junction ladders. By making use of direct numerical simulations we find that such an interaction manifests itself by resonant steps and various sharp switchings (voltage jumps) in the current-voltage characteristics. Moreover, the power of ac oscillations away from the breather center (the breather tail) displays singularities as the externally applied dc bias decreases. All these features may be mapped to the spectrum of EE's that has been derived analytically and numerically. Using an improved analysis of the breather tail, a spectroscopy of the EE's is developed. The nature of breather instability driven by localized EE's is established.

Dynamical mechanisms of dc current generation in driven Hamiltonian systems.

Recent symmetry considerations [Flach et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2358 (2000)] have shown that dc currents may be generated in the stochastic layer of a system describing the motion of a particle in a one-dimensional potential in the presence of an ac time-periodic drive. In this paper we explain the dynamical origin of this current. We show that the dc current is induced by the presence and desymmetrization of ballistic channels inside the stochastic layer. The existence of these channels is due to resonance islands with nonzero winding numbers. The characterization of the flight dynamics inside ballistic channels is described by distribution functions. We obtain these distribution functions numerically and find very good agreement with simulation data.

Directed current due to broken time-space symmetry

We consider the classical dynamics of a particle in a one-dimensional space-periodic potential U(X) = U(X+2pi) under the influence of a time-periodic space-homogeneous external field E(t) = E(t+T). If E(t) is neither a symmetric function of t nor antisymmetric under time shifts E(t+/-T/2) not equal-E(t), an ensemble of trajectories with zero current at t = 0 yields a nonzero finite current as t-->infinity. We explain this effect using symmetry considerations and perturbation theory. Finally we add dissipation (friction) and demonstrate that the resulting set of attractors keeps the broken symmetry property in the basins of attraction and leads to directed currents as well.

Observation of breathers in Josephson ladders.

We report on the observation of spatially localized excitations in a ladder of small Josephson junctions. The excitations are whirling states which persist under a spatially homogeneous force due to the bias current. These states of the ladder are visualized using a low temperature scanning laser microscopy. We also compute breather solutions with high accuracy in corresponding model equations. The stability analysis of these solutions is used to interpret the measured patterns in the I-V characteristics.

ac-driven phase-dependent directed diffusion.

We study directed diffusion of a particle in a periodic symmetric potential under the influence of a time-periodic external field. The field lowers the symmetry of the phase space flow which results in directed diffusion even if the potential and the field are reflection symmetric. We analyze the interplay between broken symmetry and dynamical chaos.

Moving lattice kinks and pulses: an inverse method.

We develop a general mapping from given kink or pulse shaped traveling-wave solutions including their velocity to the equations of motion on one-dimensional lattices which support these solutions. We apply this mapping-by definition an inverse method-to acoustic solitons in chains with nonlinear intersite interactions, nonlinear Klein-Gordon chains, reaction-diffusion equations, and discrete nonlinear Schrödinger systems. Potential functions can be found in a unique way provided the pulse shape is reflection symmetric and pulse and kink shapes are at least C2 functions. For kinks we discuss the relation of our results to the problem of a Peierls-Nabarro potential and continuous symmetries. We then generalize our method to higher dimensional lattices for reaction-diffusion systems. We find that increasing also the number of components easily allows for moving solutions.
