Effects of aging on changing arterial compliance and left ventricular load in a northern Chinese urban community.

Pulse wave velocity (PWV) was measured by means of transcutaneous Doppler techniques in the aorta, right arm, and right leg of 480 normal subjects of both sexes in urban Beijing, China (age range 3 to 89 years, mean age 41 +/- 20.8 SD); supine blood pressure was recorded in the brachial artery of each subject with standard sphygmomanometric procedures. Serum cholesterol was determined in a subgroup of 79 subjects (age 17 to 85 years, mean 47 +/- 26 SD). PWV (y in cm/sec) was found to vary with age (x, years) at each of the three locations according to the following regression equations: aorta, y = 9.2x + 615, r = .673 (p less than .001); right arm, y = 4.8x + 998, r = .453 (p less than .001); right leg, y = 5.6x + 791, r = .630 (p less than .001). Systolic, diastolic, mean, and pulse pressures were found to increase with age. PWV also increased with mean supine blood pressure but was not related to serum cholesterol (average 4.49 +/- 0.11 [SEM], mmol/l). Compared with that of Western populations, serum cholesterol tended to be lower at all age groups, systolic pressure higher at ages over 35 years, and PWV higher at all ages. Because change in PWV is directly related to change in arterial compliance, these results indicate that aging and not concomitant atherosclerosis (known to be rare in Asian populations) is the dominant factor associated with reduced arterial compliance and increased left ventricular load in these subjects.

Epidemiologic characteristics and multiple risk factors of lung cancer in Taiwan.

The specific aim of this study was to examine epidemiologic characteristics and multiple risk factors of lung cancer in Taiwan. The age-adjusted mortality from lung cancer has been increasing since the early 1950s with a constant male-to-female ratio of around 2.0. International comparison of cumulative mortality from lung cancer showed a much lower male-to-female ratio in Chinese than in other populations. Significantly high mortality from lung cancer was observed in highly urbanized cities and the endemic area of chronic arsenicism in Taiwan. Significant associations of active and passive cigarette smoking with epidermoid carcinoma, small cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the lung were observed in a hospital-based case-control study carried out in Taipei metropolitan areas. Alcohol drinking, coffee drinking and various types of indoor air pollution were not related to lung cancer after the cigarette smoking habit was adjusted through a multiple logistic regression analysis.

Effects of cis-fatty acid on protein kinase C activation and protein phosphorylation in the hippocampus.

Parenteral or dietary lipids have been shown to alter the acyl composition of tissue lipids effectively. It has been suggested that the changes in the acyl composition would modulate physiological responses by altering the kinetic properties and/or activity of the cellular enzymes. One such enzyme is protein kinase C whose activity is regulated by receptor-mediated phospholipid hydrolysis. In this study, we have examined the effect of cis-unsaturated fatty acid on the activity of protein kinase C and protein phosphorylation in the hippocampus. Our results suggest that cis-fatty acid indeed modulates protein phosphorylation in the hippocampus and the cis-fatty acid-induced protein phosphorylation can be attributed to the activation of protein kinase C.

Inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

A 31 year-old male was admitted for investigation of a hepatic tumor, which was incidentally found during abdominal sonography. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a large heterogeneous hyperechoic mass, 4x6x5cm in size, located at the inferior portion of the medial segment of the liver. Abdominal computed tomography without enhancement showed a hepatic tumor, 6 cm in size, in the medial segment of the liver. Malignancy was suspected in the light of radiological presentation. Therefore, wedge resection of the hepatic tumor was performed. The pathological findings revealed that the hepatic tumor was composed of dense fibrous tissue, plump spindle cells, foamy histiocytes, abundant lymphocytes, plasma cells and macrophages which led to the diagnosis of inflammatory tumor of the liver. The post-operative course was uneventful, and the patient was discharged two weeks after operation. Unfortunately, high fever and persisting headache were noted one week after discharge, thus the patient was re-admitted. The infectious focus was investigated during the second admission. Serological test for anti-human immunodeficiency virus was positive. Computed tomography of the brain revealed inflammatory changes over the territory of right middle cerebral artery. The patient died two weeks after the onset of encephalitis. We believe this to be the first case of inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection.
