Unusual presentation of talon cusp: two case reports.

Talon cusp is an uncommon odontogenic anomaly comprising of an accessory cusp-like structure, usually observed on the palatal surfaces of maxillary incisors. Two uncommon presentations of talon cusp, occurring on a mandibular incisor and on a supernumerary tooth in the maxilla, are reported.

Comparative evaluation of Midazolam and Propofol as intravenous sedative agents in the management of unco-operative children.

Dental treatment of very young children (toddlers) as well as children with highly negative behaviour is known to be difficult. Management of these children requires special skill and at times the support of pharmacological means. A study was planned and carried out to evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety of Propofol and Midazolam as Intravenous sedative agents in the management of uncooperative children belonging to age group 2-5 years, ASA I Category and Frankl's behaviour rating 1 and 2. The results showed both agents to be effective sedative agents, for short pedodontic procedures with minimal side effects.

Papillon Lefevre syndrome: management of a case.

Papillon Lefevre Syndrome is a rare syndrome autosomal recessive in nature, manifesting as keratosis palmoplantaris with periodontitis. A case of Papillon Lefevre Syndrome present in a 12 year old boy is presented. Only the permanent maxillary canines were present in the oral cavity when the patient was first seen, and despite efforts towards preservation, they had to be extracted. (complete dentures were made and the patient was followed up for 26 months.

Multiple supernumerary teeth in the mixed dentition.

Supernumerary or extra teeth result from disturbances during the initiation and proliferation stages of dental development. Teeth formed in excess of the normal number are termed supernumerary teeth. A supernumerary tooth may closely resemble the teeth of the group to which it belongs i.e. molars, premolars or anterior teeth or it may bear little resemblance in size or shape to the teeth with which it is associated. Discussed here are reports of three cases with multiple supernumerary teeth in the mixed dentition and its management.

An epidemiological study on the prevalence of dental caries and treatment need in 12-15 year old children in Bhiwandi (Maharashtra).

An epidemiological survey of the prevalence of dental caries and treatment need in the powerloom township of Bhiwandi revealed a prevalence level of 56.93%. The overall mean DMFT score was 1.25 +/- 1.34. Decayed teeth accounted for the largest component of the reported DMF teeth followed by an almost equal proportion of missing and filled teeth. Single surface restorations were the most frequent type of treatment required, followed by the two or more surface restorations, extractions and pulp therapy.

Prevalence of dental caries and treatment need in 12-15 year old municipal school children of Mumbai.

This epidemiological survey attempted to establish the level of dental caries and treatment need among the municipal school children of Mumbai. The prevalence of dental caries was 68.02% which increased with age. The lowest DMFT score was recorded in the 12 year age group while the highest DMFT Score was recorded in 15 year age group. Decayed teeth accounted for the greatest percentage of DMF teeth followed by the missing and filled components in all the age groups. Single surface restorations accounted for the greatest percentage of treatment need followed by two or more surface restorations and extractions.

The comparative evaluation of release profiles of aluminium, fluoride, sodium and strontium by resin modified and conventional glass polyalkenoate cements in neutral and acidic medium--an in vitro study.

The present study was carried out to evaluate the Al, F, Na and Sr release profiles of conventional and resin modified glass polyalkenoate cements in neutral (deionized water) and acidic medium (lactic acid). Twelve pellets of each material were prepared under standardised conditions and were immersed in their respective solutions for a study period of 90 days. Fluoride analysis was carried out by Orion Electrode and the other elemental analysis were done by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Statistical analysis revealed no significant difference in the Al, F and Na release profiles between the two materials in both neutral and acidic media.

Etching of young permanent teeth with acid gel--a comparison between the effect of 15 seconds & 60 seconds of etching.

The purpose of present study was to compare the effect of 15 seconds & 60 seconds of etching of young permanent teeth in vitro with 50% phosphoric acid gel using scanning electron microscope. 25 pairs of enamel surfaces selected for the study were divided into 3 experimental groups. The control group consisted of unetched enamel surfaces. In Group II, the effect of 50% phosphoric acid gel was compared with 37% phosphoric acid solution for 15 seconds whereas in group III, the effect of 15 seconds & 60 seconds of etching with 50% phosphoric acid gel was compared. The degree of etching pattern was evaluated by using scoring pattern from 1-3. Results showed no significant difference between the etching pattern obtained with the use of 37% solution and 50% gel for 15 seconds. But it was observed that etching with 50% for 15 seconds resulted in equal or even an enhanced etching pattern as compared to the pattern obtained in 60 seconds with 50% phosphoric acid gel.

Evaluation of an alum containing mouthrinse on plaque and gingivitis inhibition over 2 weeks of supervised use.

The present study was carried out on 40 municipal school children in the age group of 12-14 years to evaluate the effectiveness of daily supervised rinsing with specially formulated alum containing mouthrinse on plaque and gingivitis inhibition. The results of this 2 week study demonstrate that a mouthrinse containing 0.02 M Aluminium has significant effect on plaque inhibition. There was a reduction in gingivitis but it was not significant statistically.
