The binding of two non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, indomethacin and cinmetacin, to human serum albumin was studied by dynamic dialysis at 37 degrees C and pH 7.4. Cinmetacin is bound more than indomethacin. The affinity constant for the primary binding site is 4.28 X 10(6) M-1 for cinmetacin and 1.4 X 10(6) M-1 for indomethacin. The protein binding of indomethacin is decreased in the presence of cinmetacin.

Percutaneous drainage of abdominal abscesses is an alternative to surgical treatment. Two cases of abscesses with fistulous communication to the GI tract, percutaneously drained successfully, are presented. Reevaluation of these and other relative contraindications of this technique are reviewed.
The turnover of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in the whole brain and different brain regions was studied in rats fasted for 24 h. These rats showed an increased tissue concentration of the amine in the whole brain and of its metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in the whole brain, the striatum, the combined pons-medulla and the cerebral cortex. The accumulation of 5-HIAA after probenecid was increased by fasting in the regions mentioned above except for the striatum. The effect of probenecid was also increased by fasting in the midbrain, the hypothalamus and the hippocampus. In the striatum, the administration of probenecid produced a smaller increase in 5-HIAA concentration in fasted than in fed rats. The decay of 5-HT following p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) was increased in the hypothalamus of fasted rats at 16 h, but not at 4 h, after the intraperitoneal administration of the inhibitor. In the midbrain, the striatum and the combined pons-medulla, food deprivation did not modify the decrease induced by PCPA. However, the inhibitor induced a reduction of food consumption in the fed group, which made this group rather similar to the fasted one and complicated the interpretation of the results in these last three cerebral areas. Our results confirm that food deprivation increases the turnover of brain 5-HT and point out that the increase probably occurs in all brain areas. This increased turnover appears to be accompanied, in the hypothalamus, by an increased neuronal release of the amine. In the striatum, fasting probably blocks the active transport system which removes acid metabolites from the brain.

Human albumin and dextran 70 were used as volume expanders in extracorporeal circulation in two homogeneous series of patients. Comparative results were statistically processed. No significant differences were observed either to early postoperative bleeding or needed volume of transfused blood. Postoperative complications neither developed in the two groups of patients. The total number of platelets showed a 50 percent decrease in relation to basal extraction figures and those after immediate heparin neutralization. Results of platelet function tests were similar in both series, except for a statistical significant decrease in ADP-induced platelet aggregation in the group with dextran 70. Such decrease, however, was not followed by an increase of postoperative bleeding. Thus, dextran 70 has showed to be a valuable substitute for human albumin in extracorporeal circulation.

4 cases of familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy are reported. In all of them, the onset of symptoms occurred before the 8th mth of life, and were characterized by severe right cardiac failure. In 3 cases the catheterization revealed significant decrease in right ventricular compliance and severe reduction of its cavity. The pathological studies were consistent with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with predominant involvement of the right ventricle. The pedigree disclosed a Mendelian autosomal recessive type of inheritance.
