[Lorcainide in stable ventricular extrasystole. A double-blind study with 48-hour continuous ECG recording].

In a randomized double-blind cross-over trial, the effectiveness of lorcainide at a dosage of three times 100 mg/d by mouth was compared with that of a placebo for the treatment of subjectively disturbing stable ventricular extrasystoles (VES), using 48-hour continuous ECG monitoring. In 11 of 20 patients there was a regression in the VES rate to under 5%, in other 3 patients to under 50% of the initial values. Continuing the treatment, good therapeutic effect was still demonstrable 14 and 28 days later. However, only three patients had no side-effects. The others had sleep disturbances, hot flushes, sweating, restlessness, anxiety, dizziness, hallucinations and gastrointestinal symptoms. Lorcainide thus has a good anti-arrhythmic effect but, because of its side-effects, it should be used only in special circumstances.

Ultrasound, computed tomography and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in the morphologic diagnosis of pancreatic disease.

From February to November 1981 the diagnostic relevance of ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was compared prospectively in 75 patients with suspected pancreatic disease. Final diagnosis was confirmed by autopsy, surgery, clinical course, and further laboratory data. Thus it was possible to exclude pancreatic disorders in 32 patients. By ERCP we diagnosed all tumors; sensitivity was 100%. Sensitivity of US and CT were 63% each. In five cases US made the false positive diagnosis" pancreatic malignant tumor" (specificity 93%), CT and ERCP in two cases (specificity 97% each). In chronic pancreatitis specificity of US and ERCP were 100% and specificity of CT was 98%. Sensitivity of ERCP amounted to 93%, CT and US revealed 74% and 52%, respectively. We conclude that ERCP is the best morphologic diagnostic tool in differentiating chronic pancreatitis from pancreatic carcinoma. US is a good screening method and CT reveals good diagnostic results in acute pancreatitis.

Human gingival collagenase in periodontal disease: the release of collagenase and the breakdown of endogenous collagen in gingival explants.

Collagen degradation in different stages of gingival inflammation was examined. Higher collagenolytic activity and nonspecific protease activity were found in the severely inflamed gingiva, as compared to mildly inflamed or healthy gingiva. This was shown by electrophoretic studies and measurement of peptide-bound hydroxyproline in the culture.

Monogene inheritance of learning speed in DBA and C3H mice. A behavioral genetic study in the shuttle-box.

We carried out investigations on C3H, NMRI, C57Bl/6, Balb/c, Balb/cN, and DBA inbred mouse strains in the shuttle-box to see whether their learning behavior is genetically controlled. The highly different learning behavior of the parental strains made it possible to test the F1 hybrids and the F2 generation. The environmental influences were standardized as much as possible. In particular, influences possible during the lactation period were excluded by using foster breeding. The results enable us to postulate monogenic inheritance for the learning speed in the shuttle-box. The inheritance is interpreted as codominant. The investigations are part of a basic study in mammalian behavior genetics from the human genetic aspect.
