De novo X;Y translocation associated with imperforate anus and retinal pigmentary abnormalities.

Cytogenetically detectable translocations of Y chromosome material onto the distal short arm of an X chromosome are rare and result in a variable and poorly defined phenotype of short stature and short limbs occasionally associated with mental retardation. We report on a patient with a de novo 46,X,t(X;Y)(p22;q11) chromosome constitution who has additional features not previously described with this chromosome abnormality, including abnormal retinal pigmentation, imperforate anus, and hydronephrosis. Our patient extends the phenotype associated with X;Y translocations, raising new considerations for the clinical management and genetic counseling of such patients and their families.

Mechanical effectiveness of closed peritoneal irrigation in peritonitis.

Peritonitis was produced in rabbits using a human fecal suspension. Catheters for multiple peritoneal lavage then were inserted and continuous irrigation was performed. Contrast material was injected on day 1, 2, or 3 to evaluate the mechanical effectiveness of irrigation. Radiologic studies revealed that contrast material penetrated most or all six regions in all animals. The addition of heparin to the irrigant did not alter the number of regions irrigated. It has been concluded the peritoneal irrigation effectively irrigates most of the peritoneal cavity for up to 3 days.

A relation between automorphic forms on GL(2) and GL(3).

Let rho(n) denote the standard n-dimensional representation of GL(n,C) and rho(n) (2) its symmetric square. For each automorphic cuspidal representation pi of GL(2,A) we introduce an Euler product L(s,pi,rho(2) (2)) of degree 3 which we prove is entire. We also prove that there exists an automorphic representation II of GL(3)-"the lift of pi"-with the property that L(s,II,rho(3)) = L(s,pi,rho(2) (2)). Our results confirm conjectures described in a more general context by R. P. Langlands [(1970) Lecture Notes in Mathematics, no. 170 (Springer-Verlag, Berlin-Heidelberg-New York)].

Interwining operators and automorphic forms for the metaplectic group.

The local results announced in this paper concern the analytic continuation of interwining operators for the metaplectic covering group of SL(2) over an arbitrary local field and the decomposition of Weil's representation attached to the quadratic form q(x) = x(2). The global results concern Eisenstein series on the metaplectic group and a Siegel-Weil type formula relating the residues of these series to certain generalized theta functions.
