Sexual dimorphism in white campion: complex control of carpel number is revealed by y chromosome deletions.

Sexual dimorphism in the dioecious plant white campion (Silene latifolia = Melandrium album) is under the control of two main regions on the Y chromosome. One such region, encoding the gynoecium-suppressing function (GSF), is responsible for the arrest of carpel initiation in male flowers. To generate chromosomal deletions, we used pollen irradiation in male plants to produce hermaphroditic mutants (bsx mutants) in which carpel development was restored. The mutants resulted from alterations in at least two GSF chromosomal regions, one autosomal and one located on the distal half of the (p)-arm of the Y chromosome. The two mutations affected carpel development independently, each mutation showing incomplete penetrance and variegation, albeit at significantly different levels. During successive meiotic generations, a progressive increase in penetrance and a reduction in variegation levels were observed and quantified at the level of the Y-linked GSF (GSF-Y). Possible mechanisms are proposed to explain the behavior of the bsx mutations: epigenetic regulation or/and second-site mutation of modifier genes. In addition, studies on the inheritance of the hermaphroditic trait showed that, unlike wild-type Y chromosomes, deleted Y chromosomes can be transmitted through both the male and the female lines. Altogether, these findings bring experimental support, on the one hand, to the existence on the Y chromosome of genic meiotic drive function(s) and, on the other hand, to models that consider that dioecy evolved through multiple mutation events. As such, the GSF is actually a system containing more than one locus and whose primary component is located on the Y chromosome.

Chromosome Deletion

[Diagnostic laparoscopy in female sterility].

Over a three-year period (1990-1993), a total of 410 diagnostic laparoscopies are performed. The series includes female patients with a minimum one year longstanding of sterility. Diagnostic laparoscopy is taken to be a routine method of making exact diagnosis in female sterility cases, and as a filtering procedure in forthcoming reconstructive operation or in the event of poor outlooks of eventual conception. The commonest finding is endometriosis (in 58.2 per cent), next ranking adhesions free of endometriosis (31.4 per cent) and bilateral obstruction of the uterine tubes (38.5 per cent). Endometriosis is usually located in the uterine body 27.5 per cent, uterine tubes 26.1 per cent and pelvic peritoneum 14.9 per cent.

Adult

[A retrospective comparison between clinical cases and graphs of biorhythms].

The present article develops the hypothesis of the biorhythms in a retrospective study of 50 normal parturitions, 13 premature births of dead fetuses, 9 premature rip off of the placenta, 4 caesarean sections with spinal anaesthesia and unmotivated high arterial pressure and 2 cases of clinical death, one of which treated successfully to life again. The results show high mathematical probability, i.e. 53% of all the incidents had happened exactly in the most critical days. The authors consider correctly that a number of preliminary planed surgical interventions could be in conformity not only with the determined by the biorhythms days but with the most convenient for the patient hour, too. And this is a routine already in a lot of western countries, and especially in the fields of oncological surgery.

Cesarean Section

[The use of midazolam and flumazenil for short-term anesthesia in terminating an early pregnancy].

Aim of the study is to assess the efficacy of flumazenil when used for recovery after midazolam-induced sedation in short acting, out-patient procedure like interruption of early pregnancy. A significantly faster recovery of the patients after injection of flumazenil was observed. When flumazenil was not used, patients remained drowsy, worse oriented, and less co-operative at 1.5 and 20 min after completion of abortion. There were no significant difference between the groups with and without flumazenil at the 60 min. In conclusion when it is possible to observe the patients for more than one hour, the application of flumazenil after sedation with midazolam is not necessary.

Abortion, Induced

[A clinical trial of the preparation hypnomidate in gynecological operations].

The influence of the venous anaesthetic hypnomidate (Yansen, Belgium), used as an induction anaesthetic, was studied on some parameters of respiration, hemodynamics, acid-base balance. The authors are of the opinion that the preparation is suitable for induction in anaesthesia especially in patients with high risk.

Anesthesia, Intravenous

[Epidemiologic studies of the prevalence of arterial hypertension among industrial workers in Stara Zagora].

An epidemiologic study was carried out in June 1986 among 1702 industrial workers from the machine-building and metal-manufacturing industry--956 men and 746 women. 57.9% of the workers were in the 30-39 and 40-49 age groups. Arterial hypertension was found in 16.6% of the examined and borderline hypertension was found in 12.9%. With advancing age the hypertension frequency increases. Men suffer more frequently (18.4%) than women (14.2%). In younger age this difference is statistically significant. A relation was established between hypertension and obesity in both sexes. The characteristics of the hypertension structure and the relation of borderline hypertension with age, sex and body mass are discussed.

[Microbial etiology of the MMA syndrome (mastitis-metritis-agalactia) in swine raised commercially].

A total of 147 uterine-cervical exudates and milk samples from 165 lobes of the mammary gland of sows with clinical symptoms of mastitis-metritis-agalactia (MMA) were studied microbiologically. It was found that greatest was the share of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus organisms taking part in the microbial etiology of the syndrome. Second ranked Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Corynebacterium pyogenes along with some aerobic sporulating bacilli.

Animal Husbandry

[Drug resistance of bacterial strains isolated from sows with the clinical picture of mastitis-metritis-agalactia].

The disk method with Ericson and Bauer's solid nutrient media were employed to ascertain the drug resistance of a total of 54 strains of Escherichia coli, 25 strains of Staphylococcus aureus, 11 strains of Streptococcus pyogenes, 7 strains of Corynebacterium pyogenes, 7 strains of Streptococcus uberis, 2 strains of Streptococcus agalactiae, and 1 strain of Streptococcus disgalactiae isolated from utero-cervical exudate and milk samples of sows with clinical symptoms of mastitis-metritis-agalactia (MMA). It was found that gentamycin only suppressed 100 per cent of the strains. So far as the other chemotherapeutic agents were concerned the organisms showed a varying extent of resistance. After determining the sensitivity of the strains to drugs two groups of pigs (from which the strains referred to were isolated) were subject to treatment. All 20 sows of the first group were treated with oxytocin only, while the 446 animals of the second group were treated with gentamycin in combination with oxytocin. It was found that effective therapy in the case of MMA was impossible with the application of preparations on the base of the hind lobe of the pituitary only. It is necessary to use chemotherapeutic means tow which the isolated organisms are susceptible.

[Clinical aspects and diagnosis of pulmonary edema in pulmonary thromboembolism].

Thirty six patients that died with pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) were retrospectively followed up, whose diagnosis had been made both by the classical instrumental investigations and by angiopulmography and scintigraphy of the lungs. The diagnosis pulmonary edema in PTE was made on the base of the clinical picture, in which the characteristic pink expectoration was absent. ECG was with signs of acute pulmonary heart. The X-ray of the lungs shows, most frequently, right and diffuse interstitial pulmonary edema.

Cardiac Catheterization

[Use of Falicard and Sectral in patients with COPD and ischemic heart disease].

Thirty patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (ChOPD) and concomitant ischemic heart disease (IHD) were studied that were admitted to the clinic for the treatment of a recurrence of the basic disease within the period 1981-1982. The patients were grouped into three groups of 10 patients and each group was treated for a period of 14 days, as follows: group 1--10 patients were given only sectral 50 mg per os during the first week and 10 mg/day during the second week; group II--treated with falicard, 5 mg daily, intravenously, for one week and later 2 X 5 mg, intravenously--the second week; group III, received sectral--50-100 mg/day after 5 mg falicard intravenously. Best results, manifested with a reduction of the paroxysms of dyspnea and stenocardia, were obtained in group III, suggesting the advantage of the combined effect with cardioselective beta-blockers and Ca-antagonists in the patients with ChOPD and concomitant IHD.

Angina Pectoris

[Pulmonary edema in pulmonary thromboembolism].

Thirty six decreased with pulmonary thrombembolism (PTE) were analytically studied. 18 of them being with concomitant pulmonary edema (PE), confirmed pathologoanatomically. The incidence established was in 50 per cent of all the deceased, most often in combination with the unfavourable--factors arterial hypertension IIB stage and ischemic heart disease in 77,7 per cent. The effect of two factors on hemodynamics is discussed--elevated peripheral vascular resistance and coronary ischemia. In 18 deceased patients with PTE and PE the multiple intrapulmonary localization of emboli (61%) was predominating as well as the advancement of right cardiac insufficiency.

[Trial of the therapeutic action of ultrashort waves in combination with chemotherapeutic agents and antibiotics in chronic endometritis in cows].

Ninety cows affected with Endometritis catarrhalis et purulenta chronica, were divided into three groups consisting of thirty cows each and were equalized according to the method of analyses, were treated for experimental purposes following three diagrams. First diagram (30 cows). On the first, third, fifth, seventh and ninth days trivitaminol with antibiotic (according to antibioticogram) was inserted through the uterus in a dose of 50 cm3, as well as 20 cm3 of Borgal intramuscularly. Second diagram. Thirty cows were treated only with ultrashort waves. The radiation treatment lasted 10 days and the duration of seances was respectively increased. Third diagram. Another group of thirty cows were treated in a combination of antibiotics, chemotherapeutic preparations and ultra-short waves. As a test, on the basis of which the general status of cows was traced out before and after the treatment, were taken the indices of total protein and protein fractions and the bactericidal activity of the serum, the phagocytic activity of leucocytes, the presence of "C" reactive protein in the serum and the total number of leucocytes and bacteria in the uterine secretion. It was established that the combined medicinal therapy of chronic endometritis in cows, under the effect of ultra-short waves, led to an increased effectiveness of the treatment. The multilateral effect of ultra-short waves reinforced the therapeutic activity of antibiotics and sulphonamides used during the treatment of endometritis. Treatment duration was cut down and fecundity increased.

[Reactivity changes in calves during transportation].

The activity of 38 calves aged 15-30 days of the Simenthal breed and of crosses with Ireshire was studied before and after transportaton at a distance of 38-100 km. It was established that transportation causes fatigue, thirst and a weight reduction of 4.3 kg, due to loss of liquid in the calf's organism. Caughing, soft faeces, even diarrhea, 1.5 degrees C higher rectal temperature, and 3.0 degrees C lower skin temperature, were recorded. the MacClure--Oldridge test proved twice as fast. As a result of hemoconcentration hemoglobin and hematocrite were higher. Eosinopaenia and neutrophylia with a nuclear deviation to the left similar to the reaction of experimentally induced lipopolysaccharide fever were established. On the 72d hour lymphocytosis and an enhanced lymhocytal index were observed. Transportation led to 15-18% higher number of phagocyted neutrophyls, 30-35% higher Wright number and nearly two times higher total blood phagocytal ability. Seventy two hours after two times higher total blood phagocytal ability. Seventy two hours after transportation the total blood phagocytal ability was reduced 15%. Another effect of calf transportation was the reduced total immunological reactivity, scored by the skin test of Yoffe.

Animals

[Resoprtion of colostric immunoglobulins and serum bactericidal activity of lambs during ontogeny].

Studied were the resorption dynamics of colostrum IgG and IgM immunoglobulins in lambs of ewes vaccinated and unvaccinated against Escherichia coli and the bactericidal activity of their serum depending on the time after the first sucking as well as the resorption and the bactericidal activity as influenced by the first sucking itself. The experiment was carried out on 70 lambs of vaccinated ewes and 30 lambs of unvaccinated ewes. The period of investigation covered the time from the first to the 20th day after the first sucking, studying also the agglutinin titer, the phagocyte number and phagocyte index of the leukocytes with regard to the vaccinal strain O7 of E. coli. The specificity of IgG and IgM was studied through immunoelectrophoresis. It was found that the bactericidal activity of the blood in newborn lambs was dependent on the amount of the immunoglobulins resorbed and their specificity. A delay of 10--24 hours of the first sucking led to a drop of both immunoglobulins and bactericidal activity by about 48--65 and 20--45 per cent, respectively.
