Packing for the journey. Character traits for transcultural care.

Eight-four pounds," the seaplane attendant announced approvingly. As two nursing students and an instructor, we were on our way to a remote First Nations village in northern Canada as part of a transcultural clinical course at a Canadian Christian university. Our groceries for three weeks were boxed up and weighed to ensure that the carrying capacity of the seaplane was not exceeded. We had packed carefully, giving priority to items that were nutritious, lightweight and compact. We hoped we had the essentials. We felt prepared.

Attitude of Health Personnel↗

Culture shock.

As Canadians, we pride ourselves on our tolerance toward diverse ethnic cultures within our country. Unfortunately, tolerance is not enough. Native and ethnocultural groups have unique health care needs, needs we do not always meet. Our health care system was established before the increase in non-European immigrants and without input from native groups. As a result, the values of many nurses still reflect those of the dominant culture, often to the exclusion of other cultures. Hopefully by understanding the differences in cultural values we can improve the health status of ethnocultural and native groups in Canada.
