Electrophysiological investigations on the projections from the cerebral cortex to the vermal posterior lobe of the cerebellum.

The following cerebrocortical areas have been electrically stimulated in cats under Nembutal anaesthesia: forelimb and hindlimb areas of the primary sensorimotor cortex, primary and secondary acoustic areas and visual area. Stimulation of these regions evokes in the vermal portion of lobuli VI and VII of the cerebellum potentials at a short latency (2.8-3.5 ms) and at a longer latency (12-22 ms), which have been identified as due to mossy and climbing fibre inputs respectively. Each point of the cerebellar cortex receives usually projections by some and never by all the stimulated cerebrocortical areas. The different cortical regions don't project predominantly to separate parts of the cerebellar cortex, but they project in an apparently random manner with a patchy arrangement. In the anterior lobe we have confirmed the known somatotopy from the primary sensorimotor cortex and we have found no projections from the other cerebrocortical areas.

Incidence of arbovirus antibodies in bovine, ovine and human sera collected in Eastern Sicily.

The incidence of antibodies against 9 arboviruses in ovine, bovine and human sera collected in Eastern Sicily was studied. A high incidence of antibodies was found especially against Bhanja virus in all sera and against Sandfly fever Sicilian in ovine sera only. The incidence was higher than that reported in 1971 for the western part of Sicily. These findings suggest an increase in the circulation of arboviruses in this area; the causes are briefly discussed.

Morphologic variations in bacteria under stress conditions: near-field optical studies.

The morphologic and structural variations suffered by cells of a population of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 under stress conditions were investigated by using scanning near-field optical microscopy. The analysis of the images, supported by microbiological data, showed that the bacteria evolved from the initial distribution of rod-shaped cells of standard size to a population with structural and morphologic modifications. The detection of variations in the optical reflectivity over a subwavelength scale (< or = 100 nm), combined with the concurrently acquired topographical signal, allowed the visualisation of rod-shaped bacteria going towards a lytic process and entire "U"-shaped cells. In the latter cells, which derived from a morphology refolding of rod bacteria, cellular matter seemed to rearrange itself to attain a coccoid stress resistant form, responsible for the residual viability of the population.

[Detection of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in subjects with repeated abortions, perinatal mortality and malformed infants].

The AA. investigated the frequency of antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii in 426 women with repeated abortions, perinatal mortality and malformed newborns. They showed on the whole a low incidence even if they demonstrated a high incidence (77.7%) of antibodies in women with malformed newborns. The meaning of the observations are briefly discussed.
