Violent interactions between parent and child, and between spouses, occur at a high rate in the United States. In response to this situation, several federal agencies are involved in various research projects whose goal is a better understanding of the roots of violence. Among these agencies are the Division of Injury Epidemiology and Control (Centers for Disease Control), the Office of Minority Health (Department of Health and Human Services), and the Antisocial and Violent Behavior Branch (National Institute of Mental Health).

Schizophrenia and posterior aphasia are easily cross-diagnosed, primarily because of similarities in verbal output, i.e., vagueness, looseness of association, and apparent confusion. Tape-recorded interviews with 8 posterior aphasics and 10 "loose" schizophrenics were transcribed and analyzed to provide guidelines for the clinician to differentiate the two conditions by monitoring verbal expression. Six major differentiating characteristics were identified. The authors present hypotheses that emphasize differing neuroanatomical loci and neuropsychological mechanisms to explain the differences in verbal output in schizophrenia and posterior aphasia.
Platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity was significantly lower than control values in a subgroup of 16 schizophrenic patients (most of whom were paranoid) characterized by the presence of auditory hallucinations and delusions. Platelet MAO activity was not reduced in 16 other schizophrenic patients without auditory hallucinations. This finding suggests that reduced platelet MAO activity is not found in all schizophrenic patients but tends to occur in a clinically identifiable subgroup.
