Renal revascularization after splenic artery implantation into the kidney. Studies on angiography ex vivo, microangiography and histology in dogs.

Twenty-eight mongrels were subjected to splenic artery implantation into the left kidney for a period of time varying from 7 days to 32 weeks. In 25 of the kidneys a renal artery stenosis was created. Angiography ex vivo, microangiography and histological examination showed that direct implantation of the splenic artery into the renal parenchyma regularly was followed by an initial thrombus formation in the implanted artery and an early recanalization of this thrombus. Newly formed vessels could be demonstrated in the vicinity of the intrarenal portion of the artery already during the second week after implantation. By way of these newly formed vessels three different types of communications were established between the implanted artery and the original intrarenal arteries.

Renal revascularization after splenic artery implantation into the kidney of dogs. Studies on renal function and blood flow.

Renal vascularization by splenic artery implantation into the kidney was studied in 11 dogs. Renal function and blood flow were evaluated after creation of stenosis of the ipsilateral renal artery. It was concluded that the method can be used to revascularize an ischemic kidney resulting in a sufficient renal blood flow with an adequate distribution of blood and maintenance of a reasonably good renal function after contralateral nephrectomy and division of the ipsilateral renal artery.

A percutaneous intra-arterial technique for producing renal artery stenosis.

A technique for creating an intra-arterial renal artery stenosis in the dog by a percutaneous approach is described. The effect of such a stenosis is evaluated with angiography, renal blood flow measurements, arterial blood pressure determinations and kidney histology. It is concluded that the method is applicable in studies on renal artery stenosis with the advantage of producing a progressive stenosis without any exploration of the kidney.

Bladder cancer in Sweden.

The survival of patients with bladder cancer has not improved significantly during the past decades in spite of new diagnostic methods and treatment modalities. This observation underlines the need for improved routines to ensure earlier detection of the disease by patients and doctors and thereby start the treatment sooner. The common finding of treatment failures in patients who have shown no sign of local recurrence but have undergone radical cystectomy indicates that subclinical metastases are primarily responsible for the poor outcome in most cases. This indicates that, in addition to radical surgery, effective chemotherapy is needed to counteract the systemic spread of the disease.

Estimating kidney function during urography. Comparison of contrast medium clearance and simultaneous 51Cr-EDTA clearance.

Blood samples were taken from 21 subjects at 2 to 4 hours after simultaneous injection of contrast medium (metrizoate) for urography and 51Cr-EDTA. Clearance calculations were performed using the single injection (single slope) technique. The plasma concentrations of 51Cr-EDTA and contrast medium were measured by gamma counting and X-ray fluorescence analysis, respectively. A good correlation was found between the clearance of 51Cr-EDTA and clearance of contrast medium (r = 0.94).
