Methamphetamine and AIDS: 1HMRS studies in a feline model of human disease.

Potential interactions between psychostimulant drugs and infection with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) on brain metabolism were evaluated. Four groups of cats were studied: control, FIV positive, methamphetamine (MA) exposed, and FIV positive plus MA exposed. Frontal gray matter, frontal white matter, and caudate brain extracts were studied with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1HMRS). In the frontal white matter, FIV-infected cats showed decreases in creatine and choline, while MA-treated cats had elevated gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). The decreased glutamate in FIV cats normalized with MA exposure. FIV and MA both affect brain metabolites individually and combined. 1HMRS is useful for evaluating the effects of FIV and drug abuse in the brain.

In vivo synaptic transmission in young and aged amyloid precursor protein transgenic mice.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive neurodegeneration and cognitive impairment. We examined in vivo alterations in hippocampal neurotransmission in both young and aged PDAPP transgenic mice and nontransgenic littermates. We now report that in vivo abnormal neurotransmission in hippocampal circuits of PDAPP mice precedes beta deposition and neurodegeneration. These in vivo data provide the first evidence that dysfunction in hippocampal neuronal circuits may not be correlated with age-related extracellular beta plaque deposition.

[A closed emergency unit. Consequences for referral patterns and economics].

During the mid 1980's the emergency-room at Faaborg Hospital changed status from being open to semi-closed. From then on the patients had to contact a general practitioner before going to the emergency-room. The general practices in the area were then supposed to have a referring function. We decided to evaluate the consequences of this decision in 1991. From 25 August to 1 December 1991 we registered all patients who contacted the emergency-room. The conclusions were that no changes in the types of patients had occurred, and that it was at a greater cost to the National Health Service.

Effects of sleep of restricted sleep. A cat case study.

One male cat was adapted to different schedules of restricted sleep. The cat was allowed to go to sleep during a certain number of hours per day. During the rest of the 24 h period, wakefulness was enforced by means of a treadmill. The following schedules of restricted sleep were run: 12 h sleep--12 h treadmill (12S--12T), 8S--16T, 4S--20T. The cat was also adapted to a 36 h day: 12S--24T. The sleep was investigated after at least 2 weeks on each schedule and compared to ad lib. sleep (24S--0T). As available sleep time bacame shorter, the composition of the sleep changed. LSWS (in % of available sleep time) decreased, while DSWS % and REM sleep % increased. The length of the DSWS and REM sleep episodes increased with decreasing sleep time, as did sleep cycle length.
