Gentamicin penetration and decay in the human aqueous.

The penetration of gentamicin into human aqueous was measured after intensive drops or subconjunctival injection of the antibiotic. The drop regimen proved ineffective in producing a therapeutically effective level. After a single 40 mg subconjunctival injection an effective concentration was achieved in 2 hours and maintained for 24 hours. The significance of these findings is discussed with respect to therapeutic implications.

Ichthyosis hystrix.

According to a popular system of classification, the term ichthyosis hystrix denotes an organoid epidermal nevus composed of hyperkeratotic papules with a bilateral distribution. Our patient had dramatic disfiguring epidermal changes of this type covering nearly all of her body. Although this abnormality began at the age of 2, she does not exhibit any of the various neurological or skeletal derangements that have been reported to be associated with the condition.

Comparison between microscopical examination of unstained deposits of urine and quantitative culture.

Side-room examination of fresh samples of urine was compared with the results of surface viable bacterial counts. Examination of centrifuged deposits of urine for bacterial content was shown to compare very well with subsequent culture results. 87% of infected urines were detected, and only 6% of noninfected urines were wrongly identified. Evaluation of the uncentrifuged samples was less easy. There was poor agreement between the naked eye appearance, the presence of protein, and the pus cell count and the ultimate laboratory bacterial count. Microscopy of urinary sediments after centrifuging is recommended to assist in the rapid diagnosis of urinary tract infections particularly in young children.
