Ameloblastoma of the maxilla. Case report.

A basal cell maxillary ameloblastoma became obvious as an asymptomatic swelling of the left buccal sulcus and alveolar process, although a large extension into the maxillary sinus up to the nasal conchae and the orbital floor had already occurred. The painless and slow growth of the lesion, the thin bone of the upper jaws, the adjacent cavities and the vital structures are the main factors for delay in recognition and thus the potentially lethal result of a maxillary ameloblastoma. A review of location, age, sex and race predilection, clinical course, radiographic appearance, histological types and treatment methods in made.

[Preoperative embolization for extensive facial hemangiomas].

An extensive hemangioma of the lower face is discussed as an example illustrating the use of therapeutic--particularly preoperative--arterial embolization in the treatment of extensive facial hemangiomas. In this procedure a thrombusinducing material is inserted into the lumen of a blood vessel to occlude this vessel, and thus to reduce blood flow to the lesion. This promising technique opens up new possibilities in the treatment of extensive hemangiomas of the maxillofacial region. It may be used either as a definite therapy or as pretreatment procedure enabling a safer and simpler surgical approach.

[The method "Nasteff-Rosenthal" for the treatment of large cysts of the jaws].

The surgical technique of Nasteff-Rosenthal has been applied in cases of large cysts in mandible and maxilla. This technique includes complete enucleation of the cyst, replacement of the soft tissue flap and reduction of the dead space by placing matress sutures across the walls of the remaining bone cavity. The results of this operation are discussed.
