Interaction between auditory and visual processing in car audio: simulation experiment using video reproduction.

To clarify the effect of listening to music on the impression obtained from the landscape viewed from the car, a simulation experiment using video reproductions was conducted. The impression left by the landscapes and that of the music excerpts were measured by a semantic differential method. The impression of the landscapes is more pleasant when music excerpts are reproduced than when no music is presented. The pleasantness of the landscapes is the highest when relaxing music is being played. The impression of the landscapes is more powerful when music is present. In particular, agitated music has a strong effect to make the impression of the landscape more powerful. Music generally has an effect to 'lighten' the landscape impression. However, very heavy music makes the landscape much heavier. Musical tempo is an important factor to determine the impression of music and affects the impression of landscape.

Perceived pitch of complex FM-AM tones--pitch determination process of vibrato sounds.

Pitch-matching experiments were conducted to clarify the pitch determination process of complex FM-AM tones which consist of components whose frequency and amplitude are simultaneously modulated. The pitch is higher when FM and AM of each component are in phase than when they are out of phase. The pitch shift induced by the phase difference between FM and AM of each component becomes larger as its relative power increases. These experimental results suggest that the pitch of complex FM-AM tones is determined as follows: A complex FM-AM tone is resolved into each FM-AM component by the auditory filter bank. The spectral pitch of each FM-AM component is determined by a loudness-weighted pitch averaging processes. The central pattern recognizer determines the pitch of complex FM-AM tones by integration of virtual pitches derived from the spectral pitches.

[Interaction between acoustic environment and landscape--the effect of acoustic environment on perceived landscape and the effect of landscape on perceived acoustic environment].

The effect of acoustic environment on the impression of the landscape and the effect of the landscape on the impression of the acoustic environment were investigated by a multivariate technique using a semantic differential method. The resulting five dimensions were interpreted as "Calmness", "Activity", "Naturalness", "Uniqueness", and "Volume (Magnitude)" for both landscape and sound evaluations. These common psychological qualities are considered to be the intermodalities of visual and auditory processing. Further, the consonance phenomenon through the intermodalities, a kind of interaction between auditory and visual processing which changes the psychological qualities to the same direction, was observed when the combination of the acoustic environment and landscape was evaluated to be matched. These results may be the basis of the soundscape design under various kinds of landscape.
