Real time ultrasound via the anterior fontanelle in infants is a frequent examination. Six coronal and three sagittal planes are defined and described. These give consistent landmarks with which normal and abnormal anatomy can be correlated. The anatomy was confirmed by cutting and correlating autopsy brains at the same angulation.
A simple definition and classification of intracranial cysts and porencephaly is difficult, if not impossible. A working ultrasonic classification for CSF-containing cysts is provided, based on their character and geography. Five cases of differing CSF-containing cysts in the neonatal head are discussed, with correlated ultrasound and computed tomographic studies.
Both childhood and adult polycystic disease is seen in our series of eleven children, demonstrating the broad spectrum of both renal and hepatic disease clinically and radiographically. The relationship of radiographic patterns and survival is assessed. Confusion in the definition and classification of these disease entities is discussed.
A case is presented of a 19-day-old boy who had diffuse skeletal changes of osteomyelitis which were secondary to Group B hemolytic streptococci. The association of multiple osseous lesions with minimal symptomatology is discussed.
The second case of a pulmonary varix documented in the neonatal period is reported. It is important to be aware that this entity may be encountered in the pediatric age group when considering the differential diagnosis of a solitary density in the lung of an infant or young child.
