Anti-inflammatory activity of Aglaia roxburghiana var. beddomei extract and triterpenes roxburghiadiol A and B.

The alcoholic extracts of the aerial portion and fruits of Aglaia roxburghiana (W.& A.) Miq. var. beddomei and the triterpenes roxburghiadiol A and B isolated from this plant were investigated for their anti-inflammatory activity in rats by carrageenin induced rat paw oedema and cotton pellet granuloma methods. They were also studied for their effect on mast cell degranulation induced by compound 48/80. Potent anti-inflammatory activity was observed for the extracts of the aerial portion and fruits of A. roxburghiana as well as for the triterpenes roxburghiadiol A and B. The mast cell degranulation induced by compound 48/80 was significantly reduced by A. roxburghiana extracts and the triterpenes. The triterpenes roxburghiadiol A and B may play a significant role in the observed anti-inflammatory effect of A. roxburghiana.

Synthesis of nitrogenase by isolated heterocysts.

Heterocysts isolated from Anabaena variabilis incorporate [14C]leucine and [35S]methionine into trichloroacetic acid-precipitable material in the light. Analysis by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis shows that the radioactivity is present in polypeptides of discrete sizes. However, the relative proportions of different proteins synthesized by isolated heterocysts differ from the relative proportions of those proteins incorporated by the heterocysts in intact filaments. The two components of nitrogenase are among the proteins synthesized by the isolated heterocysts.

Pentoxifylline in strokes: a clinical study.

The results of a comparative clinical study with pentoxifylline -- a new vasoactive compound -- and xanthinol nicotinate in fifty-eight patients suffering from cerebral thrombosis with hemiplegia or monoplegia, are presented. Pentoxifylline appeared to be more effective in reducing motor deficit and was significantly better in improving the patients' intelligence and memory score. Recovery from speech deficit was equally well seen with both drugs.

Stoke in the young: a four-year study, 1968 to 1972.

Twenty-six patients under 20 years of age having cerebrovascular disease were studied from 1968 to 1972. Common risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia and heart disease were not present. Angiographical study showed a variety of abnormalities. No consistent defect was present. There was a high incidence of pyrexia and convulsions in the early stages of stroke and it appears possible that some form of arteritis might have been important in the production of the cerebral infarction.
