Search for the decay B0-->gammagamma.

We present a limit on the branching fraction for the decay B0-->gammagamma using data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy e+e- collider. Based on the observation of one event in the signal region, out of a sample of 21.3x10(6) e+e--->Upsilon(4S)-->BB decays, we establish an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(B0-->gammagamma)<1.7x10(-6) at the 90% confidence level. This result substantially improves upon existing limits.

Measurement of the B--> J/psiK*(892) decay amplitudes.

We present a measurement of the decay amplitudes in B-->J/psiK*(892) channels using 20.7 fb(-1) of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at PEP-II. We measure a P-wave fraction R(perpendicular) = (16.0 +/- 3.2 +/- 1.4)% and a longitudinal polarization fraction (59.7 +/- 2.8 +/- 2.4)%. The measurement of a relative phase that is neither 0 nor pi, phi = 2.50 +/- 0.20 +/-0.08 radians, favors a departure from the factorization hypothesis. Although the decay B-->/psiK(pi) proceeds mainly via K*(892), there is also evidence for K2*(1430) and K(pi) S-wave contributions.

Measurements of the branching fractions of exclusive charmless B meson decays with eta(') or omega mesons.

We present the results of searches for B decays to charmless two-body final states containing eta(') or omega mesons, based on 20.7 fb(-1) of data collected with the BABAR detector. We find the branching fractions Beta(B(+)-->eta(')K(+)) = (70+/-8+/-5) x 10(-6), Beta(B(0)-->eta(')K(0)) = (42(+13)(-11) +/- 4) x 10(-6), and Beta(B(+)-->omega pi(+)) = (6.6(+2.1)(-1.8) +/- 0.7) x 10(-6), where the first error quoted is statistical and the second is systematic. We give measurements of four additional modes for which the 90% confidence level upper limits are Beta(B(+)-->eta(')pi(+)) < 12 x 10(-6), Beta(B(+)-->omega K(+)) < 4 x 10(-6), Beta(B(0)-->omega K(0)) < 13 x 10(-6), and Beta(B(0)-->omega pi(0)) < 3 x 10(-6).

Measurement of the B(0) and B(+) meson lifetimes with fully reconstructed hadronic final states.

The B(0) and B(+) meson lifetimes have been measured in e(+)e(-) annihilation data collected in 1999 and 2000 with the BABAR detector at center-of-mass energies near the Upsilon(4S) resonance. Events are selected in which one B meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic final state while the second B meson is reconstructed inclusively. A combined fit to the B(0) and the B(+) decay time difference distributions yields tau(B(0)) = 1.546+/-0.032(stat)+/-0.022(syst) ps, tau(B(+)) = 1.673+/-0.032(stat)+/-0.023(syst) ps, and tau(B(+))/tau(B(0)) = 1.082+/-0.026(stat)+/-0.012(syst).

Measurement of J/psi production in continuum e(+)e(-) annihilations near square root of s = 10.6 GeV.

The production of J/psi mesons in continuum e(+)e(-) annihilations has been studied with the BABAR detector at energies near the Upsilon(4S) resonance. The mesons are distinguished from J/psi production in B decays through their center-of-mass momentum and energy. We measure the cross section e(+)e(-)-->J/psi X to be 2.52+/-0.21+/-0.21 pb. We set a 90% C.L. upper limit on the branching fraction for direct Upsilon(4S)-->J/psi X decays at 4.7 x 10(-4).

Measurement of branching fractions and search for CP-violating charge asymmetries in charmless two-body B decays into pions and kaons.

We present measurements, based on a sample of approximately 23x10(6) BB pairs, of the branching fractions and a search for CP-violating charge asymmetries in charmless hadronic decays of B mesons into two-body final states of kaons and pions. We find the branching fractions B(B0-->pi(+)pi(-)) = (4.1+/-1.0+/-0.7)x10(-6), B(B0-->K+pi(-)) = (16.7+/-1.6+/-1.3)x10(-6), B(B+-->K+pi(0)) = (10.8(+2.1)(-1.9)+/-1.0)x10(-6), B(B+-->K0pi(+)) = (18.2(+3.3)(-3.0)+/-2.0)x10(-6), B(B0-->K0pi(0)) = (8.2(+3.1)(-2.7)+/-1.2)x10(-6). We also report 90% confidence level upper limits for B meson decays to the pi(+)pi(0), K+K-, and K0K+ final states. In addition, charge asymmetries have been found to be consistent with zero, where the statistical precision is in the range of +/-0.10 to +/-0.18, depending on the decay mode.

Measurement of the decays B--> phiK and B--> phiK*.

We have observed the decays B--> phiK and phiK(*) in a sample of over 45 million B mesons collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II collider. The measured branching fractions are B(B+--> phiK+) = (7.7(+1.6)(-1.4)+/-0.8)x10(-6), B(B0--> phiK0) = (8.1(+3.1)(-2.5)+/-0.8)x10(-6), B(B+--> phiK(*+)) = (9.7(+4.2)(-3.4)+/-1.7)x10(-6), and B(B0--> phiK(*0)) = (8.7(+2.5)(-2.1)+/-1.1)x10(-6). We also report the upper limit B(B+--> phipi(+))<1.4x10(-6) ( 90% C.L.).

Observation of CP violation in the B(0) meson system.

We present an updated measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. This result uses an additional sample of Upsilon(4S) decays collected in 2001, bringing the data available to 32 x 10(6) BB macro pairs. We select events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the standard model is proportional to sin2 beta, is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result sin2 beta = 0.59+/-0.14(stat)+/-0.05(syst) establishes CP violation in the B(0) meson system. We also determine absolute value of lambda = 0.93+/-0.09(stat)+/-0.03(syst), consistent with no direct CP violation.

Excessive weight gain during peritoneal dialysis.

The authors carried out a retrospective chart review in 114 patients treated for at least two years at the Toronto Western Hospital Peritoneal Dialysis Unit and identified eight, who gained an "excessive" amount of weight equal to or greater than 10 kg of their initial weight. These patients had gained an average of 13.1 kg over the preceding two years. They are mostly males and their average age is 51 years. They are well-nourished normotenseive nondiabetics with mostly normal cardiac function. They are adequately dialyzed (per KT/V urea), have little residual renal function and typically have peritoneal membranes characterized by high average transport. According to BIA analysis, this weight gain was likely due to an increase in fat mass accompanied by a trend toward decreasing body-cell mass. This weight gain may be due to increased caloric intake secondary to dialysate glucose absorption in the setting of high average (peritoneal membrane) transport. Such excessive weight gain also may occur if these patients have polymorphism of the UCP-2 gene, which can alter metabolic rate.

Morphometric study of the equine navicular bone: age-related changes and influence of exercise.

Navicular bones from the four limbs of 95 horses, classified in 9 categories, were studied. The effects of age on navicular bone morphometry and histomorphometry were estimated, after adjustment of the data to even out the effects of front and rear limbs, morphometrical type, sex, weight, and size. All the external measurements of the navicular bone decreased significantly with increasing age. From the histomorphometrical data, cortical bone volume decreased with age in most horses, whereas cancellous bone volume and, in particular, the marrow spaces increased. The increase in the cancellous bone volume could have resulted from tunnelling of the internal part of the cortex, which converted it progressively into a porous trabecular-like structure. Trabecular bone volume also decreased with age and the trabecular lattice changed dramatically to become disconnected in aged horses. These observations corresponded closely to those reported for ageing of the skeletal system in humans. However, in sporting horses, the navicular cortical bone volume increased with age and the cancellous bone volume decreased. Exercise appeared to have decreased bone resorption and increased bone formation at the endocortical junction. The cancellous bone architecture was also improved. in that the trabecular lattice and trabecular bone volume remained unchanged in aged sporting horses. Our findings confirmed that exercise may be good practice to prevent age-related bone loss.

Detection of tryptase in bovine mast cells: comparison of enzyme- and immuno-histochemistry.

Mast cell (MC) phenotypes may vary with respect to tissue site, sensitivity to degranulating agents, dependency on T lymphocytes and, above all, the composition of their granules. Proteinases (either trypsin-like or chymotrypsin-like) are granule constituents which provide an important means of distinguishing subtypes of MCs in man and rodents. The purpose of this study was to compare the distribution of MC trypsin-like protease (tryptase) in a variety of bovine tissues with the aim of examining MC heterogeneity. Tryptase was found in MCs regardless of their location within tissues. With respect to tryptase content, bovine MC distribution resembled more that of human and canine tissues than that of mice and rats. Comparison of the results yielded by enzyme- and immuno-histochemical staining suggested that a tryptase-negative, dual-specific chymase-positive MC subset occurred, at least in duodenal lamina propria, around bronchioles and within alveolar septa. The study also suggested that monoclonal antibodies raised against human tryptase can be used for quantitation of bovine tryptase in biological fluids; this offers a promising tool for evaluating the role of MC activation in disease.

Neuropathologic findings in a case of OFDS type VI (Váradi syndrome).

Oral-facial-digital syndrome type VI (OFDS VI) or Váradi syndrome is a rare autosomal-recessive disorder distinguished from other oral-facial-digital syndromes by metacarpal abnormalities with central polydactyly and by cerebellar abnormalities. Histopathologic characterization of the cerebellar abnormalities has not been described previously. We describe the neuropathologic findings in a stillborn, 21-week estimated gestational age (EGA) male fetus diagnosed antenatally with signs of OFDS VI. Autopsy findings included: facial abnormalities, postaxial central polydactyly of the right hand, bilateral bifid toes, and absence of cerebellar vermis with hypoplasia of the hemispheric cortex. Microscopic analysis of the cerebellum demonstrated absence of the subpial granular cell layer and disruption or dysgenesis of the glial architecture. These histopathologic findings suggest that a primary neuronal or glial cell defect, rather than an associated Dandy-Walker malformation, may account for the cerebellar abnormalities in this form of oral-facial-digital syndrome.

Morphometric study of the equine navicular bone: variations with breeds and types of horse and influence of exercise.

Navicular bones from the 4 limbs of 95 horses, classified in 9 categories, were studied. The anatomical bases were established for the morphometry of the navicular bone and its variations according to the category of horse, after corrections were made for front or rear limb, sex, weight, size and age. In ponies, navicular bone measurements were smallest for light ponies and regularly increased with body size, but in horses, navicular bone dimensions were smallest for the athletic halfbred, intermediate for draft horse, thoroughbreds and sedentary halfbreds and largest for heavy halfbreds. The athletic halfbred thus showed reduced bone dimensions when compared with other horse types. Navicular bones from 61 horses were studied histomorphometrically. Light horses and ponies possessed larger amounts of cancellous bone and less cortical bone. Draft horses and heavy ponies showed marked thickening of cortical bone with minimum intracortical porosity, and a decrease in marrow spaces associated with more trabecular bone. Two distinct zones were observed for the flexor surface cortex: an external zone composed mainly of poorly remodelled lamellar bone, disposed in a distoproximal oblique direction, and an internal zone composed mainly of secondary bone, with a lateromedial direction for haversian canals. Flexor cortex external zone tended to be smaller for heavy ponies than for the light ponies. It was the opposite for horses, with the largest amount of external zone registered for draft horses. In athletic horses, we observed an increase in the amount of cortical bone at the expense of cancellous bone which could be the result of reduced resorption and increased formation at the corticoendosteal junction. Cancellous bone was reduced for the athletic horses but the number of trabeculae and their specific surfaces were larger. Increased bone formation and reduced resorption could also account for these differences.

An efficient sampling technique used to detect four foodborne pathogens on pork and beef carcasses in nine Belgian abattoirs.

The method presented in this paper should prove useful in assessing the effectiveness of HACCP plans developed in slaughterhouses. Samples were collected by swabbing well-defined areas of pork and beef carcasses with sterile gauze. Between 160 and 420 half-carcasses were swabbed in each of nine pork or beef slaughterhouses. Swabs from five carcasses were placed in the same sterile Stomacher bag, constituting a single composite sample. Standard or validated analytical methods were used to isolate and characterize four foodborne pathogens. Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Campylobacter spp., and verocytotoxin-producing E. coli were detected, respectively, in 27, 2, 2, and 14% of the pork samples and 0, 22, 10, and 5% of the beef samples. Of the 10 samples positive for E. coli O157, only one yielded an isolate confirmed to be enterohemorrhagic. Since Salmonella spp. appear as the main contaminant port (27%) and L. monocytogenes as the main containment of beef (22%), any slaughterhouse sampling plan should include testing for the former in the case of pork carcasses and for the latter in the case of beef carcasses. One should also test regularly for the presence of E. coli O157 and Campylobacter spp. in pork and beef abattoirs. The method presented here is an easy way to assess the contamination rate of carcasses at the end of the slaughtering process.

Preinfusion anxiety and laboratory-induced panic attacks in panic disorder patients.

Seventy panic disorder patients participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized infusion study in which sodium lactate and isoproterenol were used to induce panic anxiety. Patients who panicked during lactate, isoproterenol, and placebo infusions generally had higher preinfusion anxiety scores. These findings held true irrespective of the order the infusions were given. Stepwise multiple regression analyses comparing panickers with nonpanickers as the criterion variable revealed that the items "afraid of going crazy," "feeling unsteady," and "feeling paralyzed" on the Panic Description Scale had the highest predicting values.

REV 5901: an orally effective peptidoleukotriene antagonist, detailed biochemical/pharmacological profile.

REV 5901 [alpha-pentyl-3-(2-quinolinylmethoxy)-benzene-methanol] has been shown to be a competitive antagonist of peptidoleukotrienes. In vitro it has a Ki value of 0.7 microM vs. [3H]leukotriene D4 ([3H]-LTD4) binding to membranes from guinea pig lung. Against LTC4-, LTD4- and LTE4-induced contractions of guinea pig parenchymal strips, it has Kb values of ca 3 microM and was relatively ineffective against contractions induced by other spasmogens. The peptiodoleukotriene-antagonist activity is also demonstrable against the hemodynamic and vasoconstriction effects of LTD4 in isolated guinea pig hearts. Oral antagonist activity has been shown with an LTD4-induced bronchoconstriction model and with an LTD4-induced wheal response model in guinea pigs. Unlike other reported antagonists, REV 5901 is ineffective against the multiple forms of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases. Thus, in addition to its previously reported activity as a 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor, REV 5901 is a p.o. active antagonist of peptidoleukotrienes and represents a good tool for understanding the role of peptidoleukotrienes in disease.

Enzyme-histochemical detection of a chymase-like proteinase within bovine mucosal and connective tissue mast cells.

The presence of chymase-like proteinase in bovine mast cells was investigated by an enzyme-histochemical technique (naphthol-AS-D-chloroacetate as substrate) in normal skin, primary bronchus, lung and duodenum. The counts and distribution of chymase-positive and toluidine blue-positive mast cells were compared by means of successive staining. Mast cells with chymase-like activity were detected in all areas, but their proportion was greater in connective than mucosal tissues, with the exception of the skin. These results contrast with those obtained in rodents, in which chymase-like proteinases are detected in all tissues and also in all mast cells. Bovine mast cells are closer to those of human beings, in which chymase-containing mast cells predominate in connective tissues, including skin. The results suggest that more than one chymase subset is present, at least in duodenum. The possible occurrence of dual-specific chymase mast cells, as in other ruminants, is discussed.
