A tumor-associated organ-specific antigen characteristic of spontaneously metastatic rat mammary carcinomas.

An organ-specific tumor-associated antigen (TAA) was present in several metastatic and nonmetastatic mammary carcinomas induced in WF female rats by 3-methylcholanthrene. The level of TAA was high in 2 metastatic carcinomas tested (TMT-081 and SMT-2A) and much lower--by a factor of 50--200--in 2 nonmetastatic mammary carcinomas (MT-100 and MT-W9B). The TAA in the 2 metastatic tumors was identical, as demonstrated by immunodiffusion and supported by cross-reactivity with antibody against TAA from TMT-081 in a binding inhibition radioimmunoassay. The TAA was shed in relatively large amounts by the metastatic tumors maintained in short-term organ culture. The high level and shedding of TAA thus appeared to be characteristics of the metastatic tumors but not of the nonmetastatic ones. This suggests that TAA on the cell membrane or in the circulation may be involved in the metastatic process as a factor blocking potentially cytotoxic cells or in other ways leading to suppression of the immune response against the tumor.

Studies on occupational health problems during agricultural operation of Indian tobacco workers: a preliminary survey report.

Occupational sickness among tobacco farmers due to the handling of green tobacco leaves is termed "green symptom." This symptom was investigated among 197 Indian tobacco workers and it was found that 88.83% of the workers were suffering from green symptom when exposed to green tobacco leaves during their occupational operation. Nicotine concentration of the urine was estimated only among male subjects who were smokers. During the exposure period (when subjects were suffering from green symptom), more than a three-fold increase in nicotine concentration in the urine was observed. Both cured and uncured leaves may cause such sickness.

Isolation of non-myelin plasma membranes unique to white matter.

A procedure is described for isolating two membrane fractions from rabbit spinal-cord white matter enriched with 5'-nucleotidase, a nonspecific plasma membrane marker, 2',3'-cyclic nucleotide phosphohydrolase, an oligodendroglial plasma membrane marker, and acetylcholinesterase, an axonal plasma membrane marker. While the two membrane fractions exhibited similar enrichments with respect to cyclic nucleotide phosphohydrolase, enrichments of 5'-nucleotidase and acetylcholinesterase were significantly greater in the heavier membrane fraction. Selected enzyme markers for cyto- and mitochondrial membranes were not detected. Moreover, gray matter did not yield homologous membrane fractions in the gradient when subjected to the identical procedure, indicating that the two membrane fractions were unique to white matter. While electronmicroscopic examination revealed that both membrane fractions were comtaminated with myelin, the heavier fraction was least contaminated and exhibited a fair degree of homogeneity with respect to single membrane vesicular profiles. It was concluded that both membrane fractions were enriched with oligodendroglial and axonal plasma membranes, with the heavier fraction containing significantly more axolemma.

Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. Interesting gastro-intestinal manifestations.

Involvement of the large intestine in a long standing case of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa was characterized by recurrent episodes of diarrhoea synchronizing with exacerbation of the skin lesions. The radiological investigations revealed two narrow segments, one each in the descending and transverse colon, with ulcer craters in the lower part of the former. The haustra from the distal half of the transverse colon to the sigmoid colon were lost.

Stool microscopy in screening for steatorrhoea.

A prospective study is described comparing microscopy of random faecal specimens for the presence of neutral and split fat by a relatively simple, cheap, and rapid methods with standard chemical estimation of faecal fat. The method of microscopy was found to be reliable in excluding steatorrhoea in children over the age of 3 months.

Photogrammetric calibration of electron microscopes.

Attention is drawn to sound mensural calibration of the electron microscope system. A general understanding of the inherent distorsions is imperative. By using the collinearity condition and a photogrammetric self-calibration technique, one obtains the patterns of scale, radial, tangential and spiral distorsions. These are discussed and fundamental concepts involving such calibrations are presented. Some actual data are presented for illustration purposes.

Concentration technique for determination of air pollutants at sub-micro level. A new technique for concentration of carbon monoxide.

The advantages, scope and limitations of a step-wise technique for concentrating permanent gases, particularly carbon monoxide, up to 2000 times before gas chromatographic, spectrophotometric or mass spectrometric determination are described. Determination of less than 0.01 ppm of carbon monoxide has been carried out with an error of +/-10% by using this pre-concentration technique, followed by gas chromatography, with catalytic conversion of the carbon monoxide into methane before flame ionisation detection. The system used without pre-concentration could not detect less than 1 ppm of carbon monoxide.
