Folate binding and transport by rat kidney brush-border membrane vesicles.

[3H]Pteroylglutamic acid (PteGlu) uptake was studied using brush-border membrane vesicles isolated from rat kidney. Results on the uptake of [3H]PteGlu by brush-border membrane vesicles incubated in media of increasing osmolarities demonstrated that uptake was contributed by two components, intravesicular transport and membrane binding. Both the components of the uptake exhibited similar pH dependence, with maxima at pH 5.6, and were found to be saturable mechanisms with Km values of 6.7.10(-7) and 11.2.10(-7) M, respectively. These studies show that PteGlu is transported by isolated rat kidney brush-border membrane vesicles in a manner consistent with a saturable system and that a binding component may be functionally associated with this.

Simple colorimetric method for determination of pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6) in pharmaceuticals.

A simple colorimetric method is described for the determination of pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6). The method is based on the measurement of an orange species formed when pyridoxine hydrochloride is treated with diazotized dapsone and sulfanilamide in a mixture of trichloroacetic acid and sulfuric acid at room temperature, followed by treatment with an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate. Compounds such as thiamine hydrochloride, cyanocobalamin, and common excipients such as starch and talc which are present in various formulations with pyridoxine hydrochloride do not interfere in the reaction. Statistical validation showed that the method was highly precise and accurate. Results agree well with those obtained by other methods reported in the literature.

Occupational cancer in Nepal--an update.

This article is a discussion of occupational cancer in Nepal. The knowledge of specific problems of occupational cancer in Nepal is very scarce. Few researches on occupational cancer have been done in Nepal. A case-control study done recently has revealed a high risk (OR 4.2 95% CI: 1.4, 12) for lung cancer among the workers, who have worked in the exposed occupations. The incidence of cancer is thought to be rising every year. In this article an attempt has been made to establish the probable occurrence of carcinogens in the middle and large scale manufacturing industries in Nepal and the approximate number of workers exposed to different hazardous substances at the work places.

Environmental noise induced hearing loss in Nepal.

INTRODUCTION: Noise pollution in urban cities is a serious problem and steadily increasing over the years. This has direct and indirect affect to the people that can lead to the health hazard. OBJECTIVES: To find out environmental noise induced health effect on people residing in an urban community and to predict the risk of the environmental noise induced hearing loss. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred fifty questionnaires were filled up for the environmental noise pollution survey. For the case control study, 36 exposed and 25 non-exposed residents of Kupondole were included. Based on the place of residence (main road and 20 min. walking distance from the main road), subjects were divided into exposed and non-exposed group concerning environmental noise. Demographic data and information about health problems was obtained by a structured interview. Audiometric test was performed using manual audiometer. Odds ratios (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for noise induced hearing loss were estimated using logistic regression. Adjustment for occupational noise was done. RESULTS: The major health effect induced by the environmental noise was observed as lack of concentration followed by irritation, fatigue and headache. The crude OR and 95% CI for the exposed subjects was 4.2 (1.4, 12). After adjustment for occupational noise, the OR (95% CI) was 4.0 (1.2, 13). CONCLUSION: This study shows that exposure to noise causes wide range of health effects. For the exposed subjects there was an increased risk of noise induced hearing loss. The risk was significantly increased also after adjusting for occupational noise.

Gas chromatographic determination of histapyrrodine hydrochloride in pharmaceutical preparations.

A simple gas chromatographic method is described for the determination of histapyrrodine HCl in marketed formulations. Chlorpheniramine maleate is used as the internal standard. The amount of histapyrrodine HCl found by the proposed method averaged 19.91 mg/tablet, compared with the label claim of 20 mg/tablet. The method was statistically evaluated for accuracy and precision.

Simple colorimetric method for determination of thiamine hydrochloride in pharmaceuticals.

A simple colorimetric method is described for the determination of thiamine hydrochloride (vitamin B1) in dosage forms. The method is based on measurement of a yellow complex formed when thiamine HCl is treated with p-methylaminophenol sulfate (Metol) under alkaline conditions. Compounds such as vitamins A, B2, B6, B12, C, D, and E, and niacinamide, citric acid, liquid glucose, calcium pantothenate, biotin, liver extract, and folic acid do not interfere in the reaction. Extracting the complex into chloroform before quantitation enhances the stability of the reaction product and removes interference of water-soluble colored constituents in syrup samples. Statistical validation shows that the method is precise and accurate. Results agree well with those obtained by other methods in the literature.
