Antibody to hepatitis A virus (anti-HAV) was found in 50% of patients with Indian childhood cirrhosis; this was not significantly different from the prevalence of anti-HAV in age- and sex-matched controls.
Detailed pedigree charts were prepared from 120 index patients suffering from Indian childhood cirrhosis (ICC). Of the 120 families, 84 were informative for segregation analysis. Since families were ascertained through patients who came to hospital for treatment, the data were analyzed according to a single-selection model. The observed segregation ratio for the entire data was significantly lower than the one expected under the hypothesis of autosomal recessive inheritance (p = smaller than 0.005). On the other hand, the segregation data for families with at least two affected children (multiplex families) were compatible with autosomal recessive inheritance. On this basis, however, at least 50% of all the cases of ICC would have to be of nongenetic origin. Alternatively, analysis of the data by the Falconer method indicated that ICC could be of multifactorial origin with very strong genetic determination (over 85%).
An experimental model resembling so-called tropical sprue has been produced in young, growing rhesus monkeys kept on a protein-deficient diet. At a 2% level of protein intake, the animals became frankly diseased after two months, but at a 5% protein intake the symptoms appeared after five months. The animals lost weight, their skin became brittle, the fur lost luster, and facial edema appeared. The hematocrit, and serum folate, protein and albumin were significantly decreased, and intestinal absorption of fat, D-xylose, radioactive vitamin B12 and folic acid showed marked depression. The jejunal mucosa showed moderate villous atrophy. Histochemical and electron microscopy changes were consistent with those seen in the human tropical sprue syndrome. It appears, therefore, that protein malnutrition plays an important role in the experimental tropical-sprue-like syndrome in monkeys.
Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) and allergic bronchopulmonary candidiasis (ABPC) has been diagnosed in 20 and 13 cases respectively with one case in common, on the basis of laboratory and clinical findings. Most of the ABPA cases (60%) diagnosed had an early onset of respiratory symptoms, i.e. below the age of 30 years, while most of ABPC cases (69%) had a late onset of respiratory symptoms, i.e. after the age of 30 years. The precipitin bands in ABPA and ABPC were R-type and H-type, respectively. Apparently, ABPA and ABPC are independent of one another in origin as suggested by specific precipitins and dual skin reaction. In ABPA, A. fumigatus appears to be the primary causal organism although the contributory role of other species of Aspergillus, which include A. flavus, A. nidulans, A. terreus and A. niger, is evident from the present study. It is concluded that allergic bronchopulmonary mycoses (ABPM) could be caused by several fungal species independently or jointly belonging to the genera Asperigillus and Candida.
Two male patients, who presented with Candida albicans infection of the upper gastrointestinal tract, superadded over local mucosal injury due to corrosive chemical agents and chronic alcoholism have been described. Such an association of prior local injury with this type of fungal infection has not been hitherto documented. One of these patients had a gastric antral stricture due to ingestion of concentrated sulfuric acid and Candida esophagitis, whereas the other had severe erosive gastritis and Candida gastritis following ingestion of thiocyanates.

Intrinsic photostimulated thermoluminescence (PSTL) in the range 200-320 nm and radiation sensitized PSTL for 200-425 nm have been studied in Al2O3 (Si, Ti) phosphor. Causes of the effects found, partly attributed to phototransfer of electrons are described. Linearity in the intrinsic and radiation sensitized response of the 280 degree C TL peal for both pellet and powder forms has been studied with regard to ultraviolet dosimetry over the range 10(-2) to 5 x 10(4) mJ cm-2. Details of the use of powder and pellet forms for dosimetry are given.
A fifty eight year old male patient, with an amoebic liver abscess showed reversal of portal hypertension demonstrated by radiological and endoscopic evidence of oesophageal varices, on successful treatment of abscess. This appears to be the first report of reversible oesophageal varices in amoebic liver abscess. The relevant features have been discussed with reference to available literature on the subject.
Acquired hypogammaglobulinaemia is a rare disease and has not been reported from tropical regions before. A fourteen year old boy, who had symptoms of intestinal malabsorption since the age of seven years, was investigated and found to be suffering from severe hypogammaglobulinaemic sprue which ended fatally. The problems in diagnosis and management of this rare disorder have been highlighted.
There is a lot of diversity in the observations on jejunal histology between light and discretion microscopy in tropical sprue. In order to compare the light and dissection microscopic appearances, a three-dimensional model of the villous pattern was constructed after a study of 350 serial sections of jejunal biopsy from a patient with tropical sprue. There was considerable variation in the morphological appearance of the villi in different sections. The changes seen varied from mild to partial villous atrophy. Broad synechia and bridge formation between adjoining villi due to fusion was frequently observed. It is postulated that the process of fusion of villi may be partly responsible for the development of features of partial villous atrophy seen in jejunal biopsies in tropical sprue. Normal jejunal pattern reported by some workers in patients with tropical sprue could possibly be due to inadequate sampling of the total biopsy piece.
Thermal annealing characteristics of the glow peaks from 200 to 650 degrees c in Al2O3 thermoluminescent (TL) phosphor have been studied. All the glow peaks show exponential decay and follow first-order kinetics. The trap depths and frequency factors for the glow peaks have been determined from their isothermal decay and from their initial rise. The trap depths, E, obtained for different glow peaks (peak temperature Tm) can be approximated by the relation E(eV)=Tm (K)/325 and the corresponding frequency factor, s, varies from 10(14) to 10(16) s-1. The measured values of E, s and Tm for the glow peaks are shown to be consistent with the equation for glow peak temperature. The annealing characteristics and actual high temperature irradiations show that the 250, 475 and 635 degree c peaks can be used for elevated temperature dosimetry up to 150, 300 and 440 degrees C respectively. It is suggested that surface defects related to Si impurity in Al2O3, propagated into the lattice on high temperature treatment close to the melting point, are responsible for the TL traps. The trapped charges responsible for TL are shown to be electrons by photostimulated thermoluminescence studies under the F centre excitation in this phosphor.

Preparation of thermoluminscence (TL) dosimetric grade A12O3 powder and pellets five times more sensitive than TLD-100 is described. Glow peaks at 50, 125, 250, 325, 475 and 625 degrees C with emission in the blue region have been observed; Si and Ti have been identified as the impurities responsible for TL in this phosphor. Studies of the TL growth rate with exposure showed that the 250 degrees c peak grew linearly up to 400 R and then at a supralinear rate of (exposure). The growth of the 475 degrees c peak was almost linear at a rate of (exposure) 1-05, while that for the 625 degrees C peak was sublinear at (exposure) 0-85. The 250 and 475 degrees peaks together show a linear response up to 40 000 R. The phosphor had no light sensitivity and is very well suited for gamma dosimetry as pellets or powder. Studies of sensitization and supralinearity, with sensitizing exposure, sensitizing anneal temperature and test gamma and alpha exposures are reported. Initially filled 625 degrees C TL related traps were found to be essential for sensitizaiton. Supralinearity and sensitization in Al2O3 phosphor could be consistently explained by the deep trap model.
