[Topographic evaluation of the impacted mandibular third molar. Radiographic study].

Preoperative planning of surgical extraction of a wisdom tooth is always necessary. Accurate evaluation of its position and relation to the other surrounding anatomical structures is facilitated by radiographic examination. Nine hundred sixty one radiographs of patients who came to the clinic of Exodontia and Radiology were used. Of these radiographs one thousand hundred thirty six impacted and partially impacted mandibular third molars and its relation to the second molar and the anterior border of the ramus were studied. The distance between the anterior border of the ramus and the posterior surface of the second molar in comparison to the crown diameter of the studied wisdom tooth was equal in 12.68 percent, smaller in 66.55 percent (P less than 0.0001) and larger in 20.77 percent. Most of the impacted third molars were located mesio angularly (42.34%, P less than 0.0001), 21.13% were vertical, 20.60% horizontal and 2.73% lingo-angular.

[Multiple impaction teeth. Clinical and radiological study in patients with three or more impacted teeth].

The cause, the frequency, the complications and the surgical operation of impacted teeth is always an interesting subject of study and research. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the frequency and the kind of the teeth in the multiple impaction to Greek population. The material of this study was 1740 Greek (870 men and 870 women) over 20 years old. The results were: The percentage of patients with three or more impacted teeth was 11.37%. The 45.96% of these patients had 4 impacted teeth (P less than 0.0001), the 33.84%) had only 4 impacted wisdom teeth and 40 patients (20.20%) three. In the 53.03% of the cases presented only 3 or 4 impacted wisdom teeth and in the 30.81% of the cases 2 impacted wisdom teeth and other impacted teeth. The greatest percentage (82.83%) of the cases of multiple impactions comes from different impacted teeth. The greatest percentage (71.21%) of cases of multiple impactions was found in the posterior region of the jaws.

[Frequency and causes of extraction of permanent teeth. 2. Ten-year (1978-1987) clinicostatistical investigation].

The purpose of this clinical investigation was to analyze the frequency and the causes of mortality (loss) of 59,253 permanent teeth, extracted, during a ten-year (1978-1987) period, in Clinic Exodontia of Dental School University of Athens, at 35,830 population of Greece (15,260 males and 20,570 females). The following conclusions were drawn from the statistical analysis and the interpretation of the results: The mean value of extracted teeth per person was 1.65 and was lower in females (1.56) from males (1.78). Independently of the sex and the jaws (maxillamandible) the greater percentage (60.45%) of extractions was to posterior teeth. The extracted teeth were more in maxilla (55.58%). The more per cent extracted teeth, independently of the sex, were the maxillary central incisors (9.32%) and lateral maxillary incisors (8.87%) and the lower, the mandibular canines (3.15%). Caries and periodontal diseases were responsible for 83.27% of extracted teeth, independently the sex and the age. Caries was the major cause of extraction until 40 years old (79.26%) and after this age the periodontal disease was the major cause of extraction (43.47%).

[Frequency and causes of extraction of permanent teeth. A ten-year (1968-1977) clinicostatistical investigation].

The purpose of this clinical investigation was to analyze the frequency and the causes of mortality (loss) of 50493 permanent teeth, extracted, during a ten-year (1968-1977) period, in Clinic Exodontia of Dental School University of Athens, at 27804 population of Greece (13140 males and 14664 females). The following conclusions were drawn from the statistical analysis and the interpretation of the results: The mean value of extracted teeth per person was 1.84 and was lower in females (1.70) from males (1.94). Independently of the sex and the jaws (maxillamandible) the greater percentage (60.69%) of extractions was to posterior teeth. The extracted teeth were more in maxilla (52.42%). The more per cent extracted teeth, independently of the sex, were the maxillary central incisors (9.51%) and lateral maxillary incisors (8.61%) and the lower, the mandibular canines (3.41%). Caries and periodontal diseases were responsible for 80.37% of extracted teeth, independently the sex and the age. Caries was the major cause of extraction until 40 years old (71.03%) and after this age the periodontal disease was the major cause of extraction (51.61%).

[Indications and contraindications of the administration of antibiotics in oral and maxillofacial surgery].

It's well known that antibiotics are among the most widely used drugs in medicine. The administration of antibiotics in oral surgery offers a great deal, as far as the prevention of post-operative complications as well as the cure of infections diseases are concerned. Antibiotics, as all other drugs, in cases of improper use can cause harmful effects on the body. Antibiotics are used irrationally in dentistry and even more so in oral surgery for the cure of diseases which are not indicative or for the prevention of probable. As a result, there has been an increase in the frequency of their toxic side-effects plus the prevalence of resistant microorganisms. This paper describes the indications and side-effects of antibiotics in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
