Phase behavior of aligned dipolar hard spheres: integral equations and density functional results.

Using reference hypernetted chain integral equations, we investigate the phase behavior of a system of dipolar hard spheres with perfect orientational order. At low densities, the correlation functions show a strong tendency to the formation of head-to-tail chains. The occurrence of a condensation of the chains, as suggested by a recent simulation, is critically discussed. At higher densities the structure of the liquid phase already reflects well defined positions of the chains relative to each other, similar to a body-centered-tetragonal structure. Minimizing a density functional of the grand canonical free energy which is based on the liquid correlation functions, we calculate the coexistence lines at freezing. Interestingly, the system freezes at much lower temperatures than the corresponding isotropic fluid.

[Failure-time and risk analysis of fixed partial dentures].

Statistical methods of survival-analysis were applied to investigate the effects of anatomical, constructional and individual factors, which determine the "life-time" of 4371 single crowns, 1669 bridges and 175 fixed splints of a total of 1841 patients of a private insurance company. After 15 years of service 64% of the bridges, 56% of the single crowns and 45% of the splints were still under risk. The number of abutments and units, location, date of insertion, jaw and extension/normal bridge were significant risk factors.

Simple and choice reaction time methods in the study of motor programming.

In an extensive series of experiments Sternberg, Monsell, Knoll, and Wright (1978) reported that simple RT increased as a linear function of the number of items to be pronounced or typed. The present experiments replicate a portion of these results, but show that the effect is less general than may have been supposed. Since the effect does not occur in every case in which a response programming interpretation would predict it, this interpretation must be rejected. This conclusion is consistent with the viewpoint that response programming should be investigated in a choice- rather than simple-RT paradigm. In this view, motivated subjects can program responses in advance of the simple-RT interval because the particular response to be made has been precued. Effects of response parameters which are observed for motivated subjects in the simple-RT paradigm, such as those reported by Sternberg et al. (1978), should be attributed to processes other than programming motor responses.

Influenza immunization cooperative project.

During the 1994 flu season, the Missouri Patient Care Review Foundation (MPCRF) began working on a systems-oriented, hospital-focused influenza immunization project for the 1995-96 flu season with four acute care hospitals. The results of the project indicate that a combination of hospital policies, nurse-driven standing order protocols for immunization, and emphasis on beneficiary education resulted in the highest rate of influenza vaccination.
