Modulated structures in electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals.

Motivated by experiments in electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals with homeotropic alignment we study the coupled amplitude equations describing the formation of a stationary roll pattern in the presence of a weakly damped mode that breaks isotropy. The equations can be generalized to describe the planarly aligned case if the orienting effect of the boundaries is small, which can be achieved by a destabilizing magnetic field. The slow mode represents the in-plane director at the center of the cell. The simplest uniform states are normal rolls, which may undergo a pitchfork bifurcation to abnormal rolls with a misaligned in-plane director. We present a new class of defect-free solutions with spatial modulations perpendicular to the rolls. In a parameter range where the zigzag instability is not relevant these solutions are stable attractors, as observed in experiments. We also present two-dimensionally modulated states with and without defects which result from the destabilization of the one-dimensionally modulated structures. Finally, for no (or very small) damping, and away from the rotationally symmetric case, we find static chevrons made up of a periodic arrangement of defect chains (or bands of defects) separating homogeneous regions of oblique rolls with very small amplitude. These states may provide a model for a class of poorly understood stationary structures observed in various highly conducting materials ("prechevrons" or "broad domains").

Vortex rings and lieb modes in a cylindrical Bose-Einstein condensate.

We present a calculation of a solitary wave propagating along a cylindrical Bose-Einstein trap. For sufficiently strong couplings of experimental interest, it is found to be a hybrid of a one-dimensional (1D) soliton and a three-dimensional vortex ring. The calculated energy-momentum dispersion exhibits characteristics similar to those of a mode proposed sometime ago by Lieb within a 1D model, as well as some rotonlike features.

Effects of intrinsic base-pair fluctuations on charge transport in DNA.

We investigate propagation of a charge carrier along intrinsically dynamically disordered double-stranded DNA. This is realized by the semiclassical coupling of the charge with a nonlinear lattice model that can accurately describe the statistical mechanics of the large amplitude fluctuations of the base pairs leading to the thermal denaturation transition of DNA. We find that the fluctuating intrinsic disorder can trap the charge and inhibit polaronic charge transport. The dependence of the mean distance covered by the charge carrier until its trapping, as a function of the energy of the fluctuations of the base pairs is also presented.

Metastable ringlike semitopological solitons.

We show the existence of new stable ringlike localized scalar field configurations whose stability is due to a combination of topological and nontopological charges. In that sense these defects may be called semitopological. These rings are Noether charged and also carry Noether current (they are superconducting). They are local minima of the energy in scalar field theories with an unbroken U(1) global symmetry. We obtain numerical solutions of the field configuration corresponding to large rings and derive virial theorems demonstrating their stability. We also derive the minimum energy field configurations in 3D and simulate the evolution of a finite size Q ring on a three dimensional lattice.

Patterns formed by spiral pairs in oscillatory media.

We investigate by numerical simulations the dynamics of spiral pairs which are found in oscillatory and excitable media as described by the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. Our simulations include two spiral pairs which approach each other and interact. The spirals typically exchange partners and form new pairs. This type of interaction gives rise to some patterns: a right-angle scattering pattern, a rotating state coming out of two traveling pairs, and a symmetric spiral lattice. The scenarios are compared to other conservative and dissipative systems where scattering at right angles is also observed.
