The administration of sublethal pesticide doses to silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) larvae resulted in marked reproductive abnormalities: a decrease in the total number of eggs laid; an increase in the number of non-fertilized eggs; the death of embryos in the early developmental stage; the inability of embryos, developed to the stage just before hatching, to hatch; and the death of newly hatched silkworms.
Transcatheter embolization of the gastroduodenal artery with Gelfoam was performed in 12 patients undergoing percutaneous hepatic artery catheterization for infusion chemotherapy of metastatic liver disease. The purpose of the embolization was to prevent chemotherapeutic drugs from reaching the stomach and duodenum and thereby inducing gastrointestinal toxicity in patients in whom the catheter tip could not be satisfactorily positioned beyond the gastroduodenal origin. Embolization proved safe and effective in eight cases. Three other patients experienced clinical problems that may or may not have been related to embolization. The final patient had a significant complication (necrosis of the pancreatic head and gastric mucosa) that was felt to be directly related to the embolization. Transcatheter gastroduodenal occlusion may help reduce gastrointestinal toxicity of intraarterial infusion chemotherapy. However, it may on occasion be associated with significant complications, particularly in patients who are debilitated due to metastatic disease.
Evaluation of pericardial effusion was attempted with computed tomography in 11 patients. The volume and distribution of pericardial fluid were assessed with satisfactory resolution and the nature of the fluid was estimated by the difference in x-ray transparency (CT numbers). The volume of pericardial fluid calculated by tomographic methods ranged from 25 ml. to 585 ml. and agreed well with the surgically drained fluid volume. The CT numbers of the pericardial effusion due to renal or heart failure, acute viral pericarditis, hypothyroidism, and hemopericardium were +12 to +13, +20, +28 to +30, and +26 to +40, respectively. Therefore the volume and gross nature of the pericardial fluid could be estimated noninvasively with computed tomography.

A case of persistent atrial standstill is described. The criteria for diagnosing atrial standstill are separated into two categories: the lack of electrical atrial activity and the lack of mechanical atrial activity. Echocardiography of the anterior mitral leaflet is to be used as one of the noninvasive methods for the diagnosis of the lack of mechanical atrial activity.

This report describes an in-stent restenosis of the infrarenal aorta in a patient with Takayasu's arteritis in a nonactive state. A 10-mm-diameter Wallstent had been deployed 42 months previously. The stented restenosed segment was replaced by a surgical graft. Histopathological examination of the excised aortic segment showed a thin layer of fibrocellular neointima and massive organized and calcified thrombus. To our knowledge, this is the first histopathological report of a late in-stent restenosis of the abdominal aorta in Takayasu's arteritis.
Although ultrasonography is the method of choice for evaluating the fetus, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) complements ultrasonography in the accurate diagnosis of fetal abnormalities. The advantages of MRI include excellent tissue contrast, a large field of view, and relative operator independence. To date, most studies on fetal MRI have focused on the fetal central nervous system and thoracic disorders. However, our experience suggests that MRI can be helpful even in evaluating fetal abdominal disorders. This pictorial essay illustrates the various MRI appearances of fetal abdominal abnormalities and discusses the indications and advantages of fetal MRI.
A three-dimensional model was constructed from helical CT images for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA). A stent-graft was designed and positioned endoluminally on the computer. One hundred and nine stent-grafts for 101 patients were designed by this method and deployed well in all patients. The design time was reduced from 4 to 0.5 hr.
