Distribution of locoweed toxin swainsonine in populations of Oxytropis lambertii.

Oxytropis lambertii has been considered to be one of the major locoweeds responsible for livestock poisoning on rangelands, but there has been much confusion as to its taxonomic identity. The objective of this study was to conduct a field survey of several populations of each of the three varieties [var. lambertii Pursh; var higelovii A. Gray; var. articulata (E. Greene) Barneby] to document the presence or absence of the locoweed toxin, swainsonine. Swainsonine was found at detectable levels (>0.001% dry weight) in only five populations of var. higelovii in the southwest portion of its distribution in southern Utah, Arizona, and southwestern New Mexico, USA. No swainsonine was detected in populations in the northeast areas of its distribution (eastern Utah, Colorado, northeastern New Mexico, USA). The other varieties, articulata and lambertii, also did not contain swainsonine. It is suspected that a plant fungal endophyte may be responsible for the high variability in swainsonine content in populations of O. lambertii.

A deeply recessed active site in angiotensin-converting enzyme is indicated from the binding characteristics of biotin-spacer-inhibitor reagents.

Two biotinylated derivatives of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, lisinopril, were synthesized. Compounds BL11 (epsilon-biotinamidocaproyl-lisinopril) and BL19 (epsilon-biotinamidocaproyl-beta-alanyl-beta-alanyl-lisinopril) have, respectively, 11 and 19 atoms of spacing structure between the biotin and the inhibitor moieties. Both compounds were found to be potent inhibitors of mouse kidney ACE, but they lost this ability in the presence of streptavidin in free solution. However, BL19 (but not BL11), when complexed to ACE, retained enough residual binding strength for streptavidin to allow the complex to be specifically removed from solution by streptavidin-agarose beads. It was thus possible to employ BL19 for the affinity isolation of ACE from crude mixtures. These results indicate that the bound determinant of lisinopril must lie at least 11 A below the outer surface of the ACE molecule.

Shade modification of porcelain restorations.

The described technique of using surface stains to modify shade can often salvage porcelain restorations which might otherwise be unacceptable. The chart (Fig. 2), if placed in the stain kit, can be helpful during chair-side staining.

Repair technique for porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations.

A technique has been described which can be used to repair many fractured porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations. The primary advantage of this technique is that it can salvage many restorations which might otherwise require remaking to achieve a satisfactory esthetic result. The disadvantage of the technique is its lack of universal application. There are situations which, due to the nature of the fracture or the framework, are not suitable for this repair technique.

Teaching prosthodontics in general dentistry.

Because of the projected increase in the demand for high-quality prosthodontic services in the future, it will be necessary to upgrade undergraduate prosthodontics and to provide, in addition, improved prosthodontic training in the general dentistry residencies. The Federation of Prosthodontic Organizations is the unified voice of our specialty and must stand at the forefront to provide and direct this training. Every accredited program should be required to offer training in prosthodontics. We cannot expect graduate students to specialize in prosthodontics if we allow it to be downgraded, reduced in scope in our dental schools, and excluded from general dentistry residencies.
