Behavioral problems masking depression--cultural and clinical survey.

In different cultures depressions are masked by different acting-out behaviors; they vary as to type and frequency and are colored by local customs and social determinants. In Western societies hypochondriasis and psychosomatic disorders are the more common masking processes. The broad spectrum of acting-out behavioral patterns pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

Psychotherapy in combination with antidepressant drugs in severely depressed out-patients--20-year evaluation.

Eight hundred fifty-one severely depressed patients were treated on an out-patient basis over a twenty-year period with psychotherapy in combination with antidepressant drug therapy. The selection of patients and treatment technique is described. Eighty-three percent of the patients had excellent or good results within a period of three weeks. These results are compared with those obtained with electroshock treatment or psychotherapy alone.

Tranylcypromine (Parnate)--a study of 1000 patients with severe agitated depressions.

This is a study of 1000 patients with severe agitated depressions who were treated with tranylcypromine on an ambulatory basis during a period of 13 years. It was administered in combination with tranquilizers, usually trifluoperazine. Tranylcypromine is a safe, rapidly acting, very effective antidepressant and appears to be the drug of choice in patients with agitated depressions.
