The incidence and epidemiological significance of Campylobacter jejuni/coli serotypes in Romania.

The distribution per serotypes of 401 Campylobacter strains was studied by Lior's procedure, 241 strains being identified as C. jejuni (60.1%) and 160 as C. coli (39.9%): out of these 329 were of human origin (82%), including 225 C. jejuni and 104 C. coli, and 72 were isolated from fowls and swine (16 C. jejuni, 56 C. coli). Out of the total of 401 strains, 363 (90.5%) were typable. Among human strains, 32 serotypes were identified, more frequently encountered being (in a decreasing order) 29, 4, 21, 2, 1, 9, 59, 44, 36, 48, 28, 8, 47, 5, 11, 57, 10, 32, 55 which sum up 89.5% of the 296 typable strains. Within C. jejuni species, serogroup 4 was the predominant one and for the C. coli one--29. Animal strains were distributed into 16 serogroups out of which 29, 26, 48, 55, 44 were more frequently encountered. The serogroups identified among animal strains were encountered, with a single exception, among human strains, too, but with a different frequency. The importance of serogrouping as an epidemiological marker, was confirmed by serogroup identity of the strains within some family foci, by the oneness, as serogroups, in the case of repeated isolations from the same patient as well as by establishing an epidemiological diagnosis, in the case of an epidemic, occurring among the members of a given community.

[Hospital strains of Salmonella serotype typhimurium with particular biological properties].

93 cultures of Salmonella typhimurium (STm) were isolated from the infants (under one year old) admitted into a pediatrics ward. All the cultures had only flagellation antigens in phase I, a common sensitivity spectrum to antibiotics and the same sensitivity to the sets of bacteriophages for typing of this serotype. Of these, 10 strains were negative H2S and 6 immobile. Using as carrier a strain of E. coli, K12Nxr, an experimental transfer of multiple resistance to the antibiotics obtained from strains of Salmonella, agona serotype (with special resistance markers) to STm strains was made. The transfer was equally possible to monophasic and diphasic strains of STm. In the transfer to the diphasic strains, the modification of the phage type was noticed. The results suggest the possibility of the in vivo transfer of R plasmids from the agona serum to the typhimurium serum of Salmonella.

[Plesiomonas shigelloides isolated from 2 patients with acute enteritis].

Three Plesiomonas shigelloides strains were isolated from 2 cases of acute enteritis. The bacilli developed in pure or predominantly pure cultures on ADCL and Istrati-Meitert isolation media. A description is given of the morphologic, cultural, biochemical properties and sensitivity of the strains to antibiotics. One of the patients presented agglutinins in a 1/40+ + titre. The arguments lending support to the causative role of these bacilli are discussed. It is for the first time that isolation of Plesiomonas shigelloides has been reported in Romania.

[Study of some strains of Aeromonas hydrophila of human origin].

A detailed description is given of the properties of 14 Aeromonas hydrophila strains: morphological, growth in cultures, biochemical and sensitivity to antibiotics. Three of the strains were agglutinated by Shigella schmitzi antiserum. Most of the strains were isolated from 8 cases of enteritis, one from a fatal case of meningitis, and three strains from the meconium of a neonate and, subsequently, from necropsy specimens. Except for the strain isolated from the meninges, the others were obtained in pure or predominant cultures, in the absence of other pathogens. The possible aetiologic role of the isolated strains is discussed.

[Resistance to chemotherapeutic agents in strains of Salmonella isolated during the period of 1977-1979].

A study was carried out on the incidence and spectrum of resistance to chemotherapeutical agents of 500 Salmonella strains isolated from coprocultures during the period from April 1977 to April 1979. The 368 strains isolated from patients were tested against 13 agents and the 132 strains isolated from carriers against 7 chemotherapeutical agents, using the Kirby-Bauer method in both categories. A proportion of 58.7% of the patients were resistant to one or several chemotherapeutics, and only 27.2% of the carriers. As regards the entire lot of 500 strains in terms of their resistance to 7 chemotherapeutical agents, 226 (45.2%) were resistant to at least one antimicrobial product. All the strains were sensitive to Polymixin B; 31,4% were resistant to Ampicillin. 20 to 22% resistant to Kanamycin, Chloramphenicol and Tetracyclin. The strains presented the highest resistance to Sulphafurazol (46.2%). The tested strains belonged to 18 serotypes. S. agona proved highly resistant (100%), followed by S. bovis morbificans (78%) (most of the strains being resistant only to Furazolidon), S. heidelberg 63% and S. typhi murium 32%. Of the resistance patterns, the most frequent was: Ampicillin, Carbenicillin, Cephalotin, Streptomycin, Kanamycin, Chloramphenicol, Tetracyclin, Sulphafurazol encountered in S. agona. The plasmid nature of resistance to antibiotics was tested using as acceptor E. coli Hfr H. The transferable character of resistance was demonstrated in 34 of the 35 experimentally exposed strains. As a rule the transfer of resistance determinants occurred in its totality.

Bacteriological study of Neisseria strains isolated in Romania 1971-1992.

1496 Neisseria strains isolated from patients and carriers from 24 counties in Romania and Bucharest in 1971-1992 were studied. Serogroup A identified in 84.5% in 1987 shows a remarkable decrease in pre- and post-epidemic periods when serogroups B and C reach rates varying from 0 to 66.6% in 1975 for B and 38.8% in 1974 for C. Non-groupable strains were more frequently isolated in inter-epidemic periods, especially in carriers. Sensitivity to antibiotics of the meningococcal strains revealed a law rate of resistant strains, the most active antibiotics in decreasing order being: penicillin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, ampicillin, rifampicin and erythromycin. Serogroup A was the most resistant to sulfamides as compared to the other serogroups, its resistance rate rising from 18.1% strains resistant to sulfathiazole in 1980-1985 to 60.7% in 1987 and to 83.3% in 1988.
