The use of multistage exercise testing with wheelchair ergometry and arm cranking in subjects with spinal cord lesions.

The primary aim of this investigation was to compare maximum wheelchair performance with arm cranking using a multistage progressive work load protocol. In five subjects with a wide range of neurological disability and two normal males the differences observed in maximum oxygen uptake, heart rate and ventilation during two forms of upper limbs exercise, were not significant.

Electrophysiological studies in the assessment of spinal cord lesions.

Electromyography is a valuable tool in the diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders. In this study, detailed electrophysiological studies were performed on all recent traumatic quadriplegic and paraplegic patients admitted to a spinal cord unit. The data obtained supplemented the clinical information in the assessment of individual patients. Certain patterns of abnormalities emerged, and attempts were made to relate these patterns to the pathology of the various lesions.

Problem oriented medical records: their impact on staff communication, attitudes and decision making.

A comparative, two-stage between hospital study involving university rehabilitation centers was undertaken to evaluate the impact of the problem oriented medical record (POMR) on staff communication, attitude change and decision making. Staff characteristics varied from one center to another. The semantic differential component of the project did not reveal any change due to the POMR in the staff perception of the medical record, the health care team or the various health professions. However, team function with respect to the management of specific patients improved in the centers which implemented the POMR during the time period of the project.
