Dynamical multistability induced by radiation pressure in high-finesse micromechanical optical cavities.

We analyze the nonlinear dynamics of a high-finesse optical cavity in which one mirror is mounted on a flexible mechanical element. We find that this system is governed by an array of dynamical attractors, which arise from phase locking between the mechanical oscillations of the mirror and the ringing of the light intensity in the cavity. We develop an analytical theory to map out the diagram of attractors in parameter space, derive the slow amplitude dynamics of the system, including thermal fluctuations, and suggest a scheme for exploiting the dynamical multistability in the measurement of small displacements.

Theory of microwave parametric down-conversion and squeezing using circuit QED.

We study theoretically the parametric down-conversion and squeezing of microwaves using cavity quantum electrodynamics of a superconducting Cooper-pair box (CPB) qubit located inside a transmission line resonator. The nonlinear susceptibility chi2 describing three-wave mixing can be tuned by dc gate voltage applied to the CPB and vanishes by symmetry at the charge degeneracy point. We show that the coherent coupling of different cavity modes through the qubit can generate a squeezed state. Based on parameters realized in recent successful circuit QED experiments, squeezing of 95% approximately 13 dB below the vacuum noise level should be readily achievable.

Approaching unit visibility for control of a superconducting qubit with dispersive readout.

In a Rabi oscillation experiment with a superconducting qubit we show that a visibility in the qubit excited state population of more than 95% can be attained. We perform a dispersive measurement of the qubit state by coupling the qubit non-resonantly to a transmission line resonator and probing the resonator transmission spectrum. The measurement process is well characterized and quantitatively understood. In a measurement of Ramsey fringes, the qubit coherence time is larger than 500 ns.

ac Stark shift and dephasing of a superconducting qubit strongly coupled to a cavity field.

We have performed spectroscopy of a superconducting charge qubit coupled nonresonantly to a single mode of an on-chip resonator. The strong coupling induces a large ac Stark shift in the energy levels of both the qubit and the resonator. The dispersive shift of the resonator frequency is used to nondestructively determine the qubit state. Photon shot noise in the measurement field induces qubit level fluctuations leading to dephasing which is characteristic for the measurement backaction. A crossover in line shape with measurement power is observed and theoretically explained. For weak measurement a long intrinsic dephasing time of T2>200 ns of the qubit is found.

Strong coupling of a single photon to a superconducting qubit using circuit quantum electrodynamics.

The interaction of matter and light is one of the fundamental processes occurring in nature, and its most elementary form is realized when a single atom interacts with a single photon. Reaching this regime has been a major focus of research in atomic physics and quantum optics for several decades and has generated the field of cavity quantum electrodynamics. Here we perform an experiment in which a superconducting two-level system, playing the role of an artificial atom, is coupled to an on-chip cavity consisting of a superconducting transmission line resonator. We show that the strong coupling regime can be attained in a solid-state system, and we experimentally observe the coherent interaction of a superconducting two-level system with a single microwave photon. The concept of circuit quantum electrodynamics opens many new possibilities for studying the strong interaction of light and matter. This system can also be exploited for quantum information processing and quantum communication and may lead to new approaches for single photon generation and detection.

Radiation-induced magnetoresistance oscillations in a 2D electron gas.

Recent measurements of a 2D electron gas subjected to microwave radiation reveal a magnetoresistance with an oscillatory dependence on the ratio of radiation frequency to cyclotron frequency. We perform a diagrammatic calculation and find radiation-induced resistivity oscillations with the correct period and phase. Results are explained via a simple picture of current induced by photoexcited disorder-scattered electrons. The oscillations increase with radiation intensity, easily exceeding the dark resistivity and resulting in negative-resistivity minima. At high intensity, we identify additional features, likely due to multiphoton processes, which have yet to be observed experimentally.

Resonant cooper-pair tunneling: quantum noise and measurement characteristics.

We study the quantum charge noise and measurement properties of the double Cooper-pair resonance point in a superconducting single-electron transistor (SSET) coupled to a Josephson charge qubit. Using a density-matrix approach for the coupled system, we obtain a full description of the measurement backaction; for weak coupling, this is used to extract the quantum charge noise. Unlike the case of a nonsuperconducting SET, the backaction here can induce population inversion in the qubit. We find that the Cooper-pair resonance process allows for a much better measurement than a similar nonsuperconducting SET, and can approach the quantum limit of efficiency.

Non-Gaussian noise in quantum spin glasses and interacting two-level systems.

We study a general model for non-Gaussian 1/f noise based on an infinite range quantum Ising spin system in the paramagnetic state, or, equivalently, interacting two-level classical fluctuators. We identify a dilatation interaction term in the dynamics which survives the thermodynamic limit and circumvents the central limit theorem to produce non-Gaussian noise even when the equilibrium distribution is that of noninteracting spins. The resulting second spectrum ("noise of the noise") itself has a universal 1/f form which we analyze within a dynamical mean-field approximation.

Magnetization plateaus of SrCu(2)(BO(3))(2) from a Chern-Simons theory.

The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice is studied by a mapping onto spinless fermions carrying one quantum of statistical flux. Using a mean-field approximation these fermions populate the bands of a generalized Hofstadter problem. Their filling leads to the magnetization curve. For SrCu(2)(BO(3))(2) we reproduce plateaus at 1/3 and 1/4 of the saturation moment and predict a new one at 1/2. Gaussian fluctuations of the gauge field are shown to be massive at these plateau values.

Theory of interlayer tunneling in bilayer quantum Hall ferromagnets.

Spielman et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5808 (2000] recently observed a large and sharp Josephson-like zero-bias peak in the tunnel conductance of a bilayer system in a quantum Hall ferromagnet state. We argue that disorder-induced topological defects in the pseudospin order parameter limit the peak size and destroy the predicted Josephson effect. We predict that the peak would be split and shifted by an in-plane magnetic field in a way that maps the dispersion relation of the ferromagnet's Goldstone mode. We also predict resonant structures in the dc I-V characteristic under bias by an ac electric field.

Strong correlation to weak correlation phase transition in bilayer quantum Hall systems.

At small layer separations, the ground state of a nu = 1 bilayer quantum Hall system exhibits spontaneous interlayer phase coherence. The evolution of this state with increasing layer separation d has been a matter of controversy. We report on small system exact diagonalization calculations which suggest that a single-phase transition, likely of first order, separates incompressible states with strong interlayer correlations from compressible states with weak interlayer correlations. We find a dependence of the phase boundary on d and interlayer tunneling amplitude that is in very good agreement with recent experiments.

Effective attraction between like-charged colloids in a two-dimensional plasma.

The existence of attractions between like-charged colloids immersed in ionic solution has been discovered in recent experiments. This phenomenon contradicts the predictions of Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek and indicates a failure of mean-field theory. We study a toy model based on a two-dimensional one-component plasma, which is exactly soluble at one particular coupling constant. We show that colloidal interaction results from a competition between ion-ion repulsion and longer ranged ion-void attraction.

Reorientation of anisotropy in a square well quantum hall sample.

We have measured magnetotransport at half-filled high Landau levels in a quantum well with two occupied electric subbands. We find resistivities that are isotropic in perpendicular magnetic field but become strongly anisotropic at nu = 9/2 and 11/2 on tilting the field. The anisotropy appears at an in-plane field, B(ip) approximately 2.5 T, with the easy-current direction parallel to B(ip) but rotates by 90 degrees at B(ip) approximately 10 T and points now in the same direction as in single-subband samples. This complex behavior is in quantitative agreement with theoretical calculations based on a unidirectional charge density wave state model.
