[Micromechanical characteristics of restoration stomatological materials and human dental enamel and dentin].

Polished sections of human teeth and 11 Russian and foreign restoration materials (silver amalgam, cements, and polymer-based materials) were studied with an MTI-3M microhardness meter. Microhardness immediately under loaded diamond indentor of the device, elastic and plastic deformations were evaluated. Dental enamel is characterized by the greatest microhardness. Inorganic filler essentially (3-fold) increases the microhardness of polymer-based material. Microhardness of dental tissues and restoration materials notably decreased as the strength of indentor loading, i.e. the depth of its submerging in material, increased. Dental enamel is characterized by the most elastic deformation; dentin approximates the enamel by this parameter, as well as some restoration materials (prodigy, degufil-H, degufil-SC) when exposed to the saliva.

[Clinical laboratory research on the properties of Aquafresh toothpaste].

The study of the teeth in 35 patients with chronic catarrhal generalized gingivitis and periodontitis of moderate severity using tooth paste Aquafresh for a months confirmed high cleansing, antiinflammatory and refreshing potential of the paste which, moreover, has a good taste and mint flavor. Laboratory tests showed low abrasibility of the paste, its ability to raise by 12.5% the resistance of the enamel to demineralizing action of the lemon juice. Not a single case of the paste-induced irritation of the oral mucosa and teeth was registered.

[The characteristics of the development of caries in human dental fissures based on microhardness data. Its diagnosis, treatment and prevention].

Hygienic status of the teeth was assessed after Fyodorov-Volodkina and Green-Vermillion in 500 patients aged 26 to 68 consulted for caries, chronic and acute periodontitis. A good hygienic status of the teeth was observed in 70 subjects: the Fyodorov-Volodkina hygienic index was 1, the Green-Vermillion index O. The Fyodorov-Volodkina index from 1,7 to 5 in 430 patients, depending on the hygienic habits. Patients whose hygienic index was still unsatisfactory despite special training, were subjected to hygienic treatment of teeth with a drill fitted with a modified toothbrush, using water suspension of tooth powder, zink oxide, phosphate cement powder, or tooth paste. Hygienic treatment of teeth by this method proved to be highly effective. The duration of the procedure is 3 to 5 min.

Wear resistance and microhardness of human teeth.

The dependence between the wear resistance and microhardness of the different tissues of human teeth has been studied. During these experiments the proportionality between the wear volume of the tissues under study and their microhardness (by indentation and scratching methods) has been observed.

[The bone tissue of the jaws in congenital and acquired deformities].

Biophysical parameters of the jam bones were examined in patients with congenital and acquired deformations. Ash content, density, mineral content, and microhardness were estimated in 58 patients aged 17 to 28. The mean values of these characteristics were found to be unrelated to the individual features and the type of the changes in the bone tissue, associated with deformations of the jaws. Frequency ranging of the individual values helped obtain a more objective picture of the bone tissue status. Bone tissue density was found increased in congenital maxillary and mandibular deformations. These data evidence a lowered plasticity of the bone tissue in the patients with congenital deformations of the jaw bones.

[The effect of toothbrushes on human dental enamel and dentin wear].

The authors compare the effects of natural (porcine) and synthetic (Toinex, USA, and Eschalon, France) bristle and rough toothbrushes on the tooth enamel and dentin in the course of toothbrushing. No abrasive effects were detected when brushing normal teeth in clear water. The rate of enamel and dentin abrasion in tooth powder or tooth paste suspension depended on the shape of bristle cut and particularly on the toothbrush roughness.

[Dependence of the dentinal abrasion of human teeth on their microhardness].

The dentin resistance against abrasion was studied as related to its microhardness. Sections of 15 intact teeth were investigated (central upper incisors). Water suspensions (40% weight-to weight) of dicalcium phosphate (DCP, FRG; and DKF-1 and DKF-2, USSR) were used as abrasives. Dentin microhardness was measured with a PMT-3 device, and abrasion assessed with profilographic technique. Dentin abrasion was related to its microhardness and to the kind of abrasive used. Dentin abrasion increased as its microhardness decreased. DCF showed minimal abrasive effect, DKF-2 had maximal effect with DKF-1 keeping the intermediate position.
